Job Summary
For the past decade, the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) system has been undergoing an aggressive transformation to modernize its facilities and set the strategic direction for 21st century public library services in the District of Columbia. DCPL’s physical campus includes 25 neighborhood libraries and the newly modernized Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial (Central) Library. The Library Program Coordinator (Selector) works under the supervision of the Associate Director of Collection Services, coordinating with vendors, staff, and other collections stakeholders to efficiently build on and improve DCPL’s collection.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Select adult non‑fiction, periodicals, and government documents print and electronic materials for DCPL.
Use quantitative and qualitative information to determine the quantity of materials to purchase and their placement.
Administer aspects of the budget and fiscal activities.
Explore and implement new library materials, products, and services appropriate for circulation.
Coordinate procedures and workflows related to selection and management of collection areas.
Monitor industry changes in publishing timelines and products; make recommendations.
Promote the collection through collaboration with front‑line staff.
Gather information about community reading needs and develop partnerships across the library.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university.
Two (2) years of experience in selecting and managing materials.
Skill in communicating, collaborating, and establishing effective working relationships.
Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
Experience in long‑range planning and budget management.
Proficient knowledge of ILS, spreadsheets, web, and other computer applications.
Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service‑oriented environment.
Project management and planning skills desired.
Ability to use and integrate new technology.
Knowledge of best practices in collection development.
At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level (CS11) applicable to District employees.
Working Conditions
Work involves everyday risks or discomforts typically associated with libraries, offices, and meeting and training rooms, which are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated.
Schedule
This position primarily works during standard business hours with flexibility to perform duties during evenings and weekends to support operational needs.
