Job Description
Reporting to the Air Quality Team Supervisor, the Air Quality Technician specializes in intensive cleaning and decontamination of mechanical/electrical equipment, rooms, ducts, and air distribution devices to improve and maintain air quality in campus buildings. The technician is a front‑line member of the Air Quality Decontamination Team, responding to potential exposure incidents 24/7. Responsibilities include operating personal protective equipment, specialized disinfecting tools, performing carpentry, sheet metal, insulation, and painting tasks, and maintaining and repairing tools and safety equipment. The role involves stopping, starting, disassembling, and reassembling mechanical and electrical equipment for cleaning operations, providing repairs to air handling units, ductwork, and fan coil units, and performing routine filter changes and service on building equipment. The technician may need to respond to emergency callbacks after normal business hours.

Required Qualifications

Industrial cleaning knowledge and/or mechanical/HVAC experience.

Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle daily.

Ability to safely move heavy objects (60 pounds or more), climb and work from elevated workstations, and work long periods standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.

Ability to work in non‑permit required confined spaces, wear a respirator and appropriate PPE, and wear provided uniforms.

Ability to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.

May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet departmental needs.

This is a designated emergency personnel position.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience cleaning and decontaminating mechanical/electrical equipment and rooms.

Experience decontaminating public surfaces.

Previous carpentry, sheet metal, insulation, or painting experience.

HVAC experience such as repairing air handling units, ductwork, turning vanes, installing filter racks, replacing fans and motors, and performing routine filter changes.

Experience following safety procedures and using safety equipment.

Previous experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or computerized work order system.
