Position: Library: Media Specialist

Campus: Barber Middle School

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Immediate Supervisor: Campus Principal

Pay Grade: Per Compensation Manual

POSITION SUMMARY :

Direct school literacy, media, and technology operations to ensure students, teachers, administrators, and staff are capable users of media resources and technology tools by creating an information-rich environment conducive to the 21st Century Learner

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree from accredited college or university (preferred)

Valid Texas school librarian certificate or endorsement (preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Demonstrate effective design and delivery of staff development

Possess knowledge of library media science

Possess an understanding of reading instructional practice and research skills

Demonstrate the ability to instruct and manage student behavior

Exhibit strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

At least three (3) years experience in library/media center in a public school setting (preferred)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Consult and collaborate directly with teachers and curriculum team, and work with students to model or demonstrate technology-infused lessons

Assist teachers in integrating appropriate technology tools in the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning

Design and implement teaching and learning activities, both individually and in collaboration with teachers and staff that reflect current research and practice, including project-based learning and new technology

Adapt materials and teaching strategies to the interests, needs, and abilities of the learner

Provide students the capacity to build both informational literacy and technological skills conducive to the 21st‑century learner

Provide support for online resources and online assessments

Deliver targeted interventions to students through small group sessions to address and meet their academic needs

Guide students to evaluate and use information in digital and text formats

Support personnel in the role of an instructional technology coach, teacher leader, and professional development specialist for the campus

Research and develop methods of academic standards and curriculum with effective technology‑based teaching and learning strategies to improve student achievement

Facilitate campus and district technology integration efforts to promote 21st‑century teaching and learning

Catalogacquisitions; process, organize, distribute, maintain, disposeofinventory resources

Demonstrate the ability to manage funds and media/library resources within established district guidelines, including but not limited to the: collection and maintenance of student fines as well as preparation of parent notifications; reconcile receipt of resources with packing slips and invoices

Compose and deliver oral presentations and written reports to campus/district administrators, school board, and campus staff

Exercise a leadership role in encouraging media utilization by students and staff

Promote open access to resources and information during and beyond the instructional day and school year

Superviseassistants, student aides, and volunteers

Work in a spirit of cooperation and teamwork with staff, teachers, administrators, and students

Possess the ability to work alone to efficiently solve problems

Pursue staff development opportunities and professional resources to stay current in the fields of technology integration and media services

Model and promote the principles of intellectual freedom, access to information privacy, and copyright

Seek opportunities to network with media specialists and other professionals

Research, evaluate, and implement new instructional resources, including software, web sites, and long‑distance learning opportunities

Exhibit a strong foundation in pedagogy and teaching methodologies and be knowledgeable about the integration of technology into the curriculum and instructional program

Establish and maintain efficient and effective routines for circulation and shelving of materials

Manage circulation/inventory of books and library materials/equipment as well as campus media and technology equipment

Apply new technology to the library media program and services, including telecommunication systems and services, computer systems and services, administration of hardware and software systems (i.e., E‑Books, Destiny, Eduphoria, Chromebooks, etc.) and faculty design for proper media use.

Professionally represent the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students

Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required

Demonstrate ethical behavior in all professional contexts

Comply with the applicable district, state, local, and federal laws, rules and regulations

Appropriately maintain and secure confidential personnel records and inquiries

Promote and follow all safety rules and keep work areas clean and orderly at all times

Meet regular and predictable attendance requirements

Adhere to the district’s safety policies and procedures

Perform other tasks and assume such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned by the supervisor

Alternative methods of instruction

Act as the Technology Liaison for the campus

Act as the GT Liaison for the campus

All other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly oversee the library program and assistants

Provide direction and interface with campus personnel on matters of instructional technology

Maintain a safe environment

WORKING CONDITIONS
Mental Demands/ Physical Demands/ Environmental Factors:

Regularly required to talk and hear

Frequently walk; sit; use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach a variety of objects throughout the day

Often use general library equipment including, but not limited to, a keyboard, mouse and video display terminal, student use computer systems, teacher technology, and the library inventory and circulation systems

Occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb stairs

Maintain emotional control under stress, and sometimes work prolonged and/or irregular hours

Regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds

Vision abilities required by this job include close vision

EVALUATIONS

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by self‑evaluation and principal conference.
