School Library Media Specialist

Job Summary
The Media Specialist manages the school’s library media program to support teaching and learning. The position promotes literacy, information literacy, digital citizenship, and effective use of media and technology while collaborating with teachers to integrate research and instructional resources into the curriculum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction & Teacher Collaboration
Align instruction with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
Collaborate with teachers on inquiry-based learning, research, and digital literacy.
Coach teachers on integrating technology and library resources.
Empower students as readers, writers, creators, and innovators.
Library Program Management
Develop, organize, and maintain the library media collection (books, digital resources, databases, multimedia).
Manage cataloging, circulation, and inventory of library materials.
Evaluate and select resources aligned with curriculum and student needs.
Maintain a welcoming, inclusive library environment.
Support the use of digital tools, databases, and educational technology.
Provide guidance on digital citizenship, copyright, and responsible technology use.
Assist teachers and students with research tools and media production resources.
Provide technology support for student and staff devices.
Leadership & School Support
Serve as an instructional leader and resource for staff on literacy and information skills.
Manage the library budget and ordering of materials.
Coordinate reading programs, book fairs, and literacy events.
Train and supervise library assistants and volunteers.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Master’s degree in Library Science, School Library Media, or Information Science.
Licensure
Must hold or be eligible for School Library Media Coordinator licensure through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Skills
Knowledge of library management systems and research databases.
Strong collaboration and instructional skills.
Ability to integrate technology into teaching and learning.
Organization, communication, and leadership abilities.
School library/media center within a K-8 public school.
Works closely with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
