Position Overview:

Newark Board of Education principals lead student‑centered schools that prepare Newark students to be the innovators of the future, collaborate and solve problems across cultural and geographic borders, and live meaningful, productive and self‑sufficient lives. They are responsible for all aspects of school programs, instruction, personnel management, operations and equity of educational opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
Instructional Leader

Provides actionable feedback to teachers and administrators and implements the Board’s evaluation system with fidelity.

Creates and implements a Professional Development Plan that strategically responds to collective and individual teacher and staff needs.

Strategically manages staff resources, assigning and scheduling teachers to maximize their impact.

Develops and ensures implementation of rigorous curricula, instruction and assessment aligned to state standards.

Monitors programs and engages in a continuous cycle of reflection and improvement to drive student outcomes.

Ensures instructional practice is intellectually challenging, authentic and personalized.

Provides a coherent system of academic and social supports for all students.

Organizational Leader

Strategically develops and cultivates a shared school mission and core values.

Creates a culture of collective ownership and continuous professional growth.

Models ethical conduct and supports each student’s academic and social–emotional development.

Works to create equity of educational opportunity within the school.

Utilizes culturally responsive practices to promote student success and well‑being.

Ensures health and safety of all students and staff.

Administers fair and equitable conflict management systems.

Recruits, hires, develops and retains effective and caring teachers and staff.

Community Leader

Creates and sustains collaborative relationships with families and partners.

Builds and sustains productive partnerships with community, public and private sector partners.

Understands and employs the community’s cultural, social and intellectual resources.

Administrative Leader

Assumes responsibility for management of the school in accordance with law and board policies.

Seeks, acquires and manages fiscal and other resources to maximize impact.

Uses technology to improve quality and efficiency of school operations.

Develops relationships with feeder and connecting schools for enrollment and academic alignment.

Maintains productive relationships with Central Office and the Assistant Superintendent.

Ensures safekeeping of confidential records and proper destruction of public records.

Prepares or supervises all required reports and paperwork.

Performs other duties as assigned or required by law or policy.

Qualifications and Requirements

Master’s degree from an accredited institution.

New Jersey Principal Standard Certificate or a Certificate of Eligibility for Principal.

Demonstrated successful building‑level administrative or supervisory experience.

Demonstrated success in increasing student achievement and effective staff development using inclusive approaches.

Preferred: background or experience in visual arts or fashion.

Reports To
Assistant Superintendent

Salary, Employment Period, and Union Affiliation

Salary: $135,300–169,500 (pending salary negotiations)

Employment Period: Twelve (12) months

Union Affiliation: City Association of Supervisors and Administrators (CASA)
