Chiller Design Engineer
Belcan Corporation, Des Moines, IA, United States
Chiller Design Engineer
High Ridge, MO 63049
Pay Rate: $52/hr-$55/hr
Bill Rate: $85/hr-$87/hr
Contract-to-hire
With a focus on HVAC, this role designs, develops, and implements chilled water systems for Commercial/Industrial applications or Navy fleet. Requires expertise in refrigeration, hydronics, and mechanical engineering. Responsibilities include selecting components such as compressors and heat exchangers, creating and reviewing electrical and piping schematics, analyzing system efficiency, and ensuring designs meet customer requirements and industry standards. The role requires several years of experience in HVAC and commercial/marine chilled water systems.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Component Selection: Select appropriate mechanical components, such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, and piping, to create a customized and efficient system.
Technical Documentation: Create and maintain engineering drawings, bill of materials (BOM), and product specifications for chiller systems. Interpret customer requirements and configure products accordingly.
System Analysis & Optimization: Analyze system performance to maximize efficiency, ensuring optimal energy consumption and proper component de‑rating for applications like glycol or PGW usage.
Application Support: Provide technical support to customers and factory R&D teams, interacting with customers to ensure products meet their unique needs.
Manufacturing Support: Ensure products are built according to design and customer requirements, working with manufacturing processes. Experience with commissioning, startup, operation, and troubleshooting is required.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is typically required. A Master's degree is a plus.
Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of refrigeration theory and cycles, chiller mechanics and complex system controls, hydronics, and pipefitting. Knowledge of MIL/Navy Standards is beneficial.
Software & Tools: Understanding of engineering design software (CREO/Windchill preferred), refrigeration manufacturer's software, and tools for creating electrical and mechanical documentation.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the U.S. commercial or Marine chilled water industry with a focus on centrifugal chillers.
Applications: Designs systems for large commercial buildings, industrial processes, hypermarkets, and data centers requiring significant cooling capacity.
Industry Experience Preferred: HVAC manufacturers (e.g., LG Electronics, Johnson Controls, Trane, Carrier, Daikin), engineering firms (e.g., Drake Chillers, NY Engineers), or facilities management departments of large organizations.
Types of Chillers: Focuses on modular and large centrifugal chillers, depending on application and scale. Experience with magnetic or ceramic bearing oil‑free compressors in 300T and above is highly desired; experience with new bearing technologies is beneficial.
