Patient Accounts Rep-Financial Counselor

The Financial Counselor serves as the primary point of contact for patients and their families regarding the financial aspects of treatment. This role involves verifying insurance benefits, and establishing payment plans for mental health and substance abuse services. The Financial Counselor will be required to speak with patients or their guarantor regarding the collection of self-pay or estimated out-of-pocket costs. The ideal candidate balances technical expertise in medical billing with compassion and sensitivity toward patients in crisis. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: insurance verification (fast turnaround), speaking with every adult patient on the units regarding demographics, OHI, and getting the proper financial counseling paperwork signed, uploading paperwork into the patients MS4 account, calling on self-pay accounts (each pt receives 2 calls), determining when an account is ready for bad debt, completing the physician charge sheet and uploading into the physician billing service, supporting your fellow team members.
Knowledge: Strong experience in upfront collections; knowledge and understanding explanation of benefits, experience in reading and understanding insurance contracts, letters of agreement, and discount negotiations request. Knowledge of the business office department and personnel policies. Skills in oral and written communication, organizational skills and interpersonal skills; skill in the operation of office equipment.

Schedule: Monday Friday 7:00am-3:30pm
Qualifications: Minimum qualifications: Education: High school diploma required; college degree preferred Experience: Experience in a medical office or hospital business office setting required. Age-specific competencies: N/A Other: Basic reading, writing and mathematics skills; good telephone and oral communication skills; legible handwriting; ability to concentrate on tasks in high traffic area; ability to maintain information as highly confidential; meet deadlines; good organization and priority setting skills; preferred basic data entry skills with some computer experience; strong customer service skills; empathy; attention to detail. HIPAA: Has access to medical records of cases to which they are assigned to work. Use of PHI is limited to assigned tasks.
