UTS - Design Camp Counselors, Support Staff and/or Teaching Assistants 2026

Responsibilities

Counselor — Counselors are responsible for supervising their group of students at all times, acting as a mentor and leader during studio activities, team outings and presentations, and helping facilitate learning during each studio project. Counselors must take an active role in the studio environment by understanding the projects and providing feedback throughout the process. During each week of camp, counselors are required to present a project of their own that they have completed during their time as an NC State College of Design student. Counselors also represent the College of Design and their studio discipline. Residential Design Camp counselors stay on campus in a residence hall and are available 24/7 during the week of camp.

Support Staff — Support staff assist counselors, instructors and teaching assistants, help ensure the smooth functioning of Design Camp, and may step into a counselor role if needed. They prep and clean camp facilities, aid with daily tasks, manage materials, and ensure camper safety. They must maintain a positive professional relationship with campers and staff and be flexible to meet evolving needs.

Teaching Assistant — Teaching Assistants are assigned to a specific studio and assist camp instructors with studio instruction, project critiques, classroom management, and transitions between activities. They support instructors and campers by assisting with studio preparation and managing project supplies. Preparation work may include up to 10 hours per camp week plus required Camp Prep Days, with compensation factored accordingly. TA duties include direct interaction with campers to support learning and design skills.

Primary Purpose of Position
All Design Camp staff have a strong impact on campers and potential future designers. Counselors help students around the clock, work with students on a variety of projects, and help them connect personal experiences to the path towards becoming a designer. Counselors lead groups, mentor students, and collaborate with instructors and teaching assistants to facilitate learning. They also represent the College of Design during camp activities.

Compensation (Examples)

Counselor — Anticipated Hiring Range: $700-$1,450 per camp week. Compensation varies based on the camp program and position assigned.

Support Staff — Anticipated Hiring Range: $650-$800 per camp week.

Teaching Assistant — Anticipated Hiring Range: $660-$750 per camp week.

Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education — Must be a NC State College of Design graduate or upper level undergraduate student.

Department Required Skills — All candidates must attend ONE information session (February 4 OR February 5, 2025) online, complete a Creative Application, and refer to the Counselor and TA information sheet. Special Instructions cover training retreats and prep days; attendance is required. Candidates selected for Counselor positions must attend an overnight training retreat June 2-5, 2026. CAs for TA must attend planning and preparation sessions in Spring; instructors and TAs must attend May 20-22, 2026 and part of the Counselor Training Retreat on June 5. All employees must attend Camp Prep Day for their weeks.

Preferred/Other — Attending information sessions and completing required trainings are mandatory. Failure to attend training, prep days, and clean-up days may result in dismissal or payroll reduction.
