
Transportation Engineer 3 (Engineering) State Bridge Design

Job Overview
Transportation Engineer 3 (Engineering) – State Bridge Design, Division of Bridges, Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT). Full‑time, first shift, 40 hours per week, with hybrid (in‑office / telework) options. Located in Newington, CT.
Responsibilities
Lead development of projects and tasks that improve safety, capacity, and efficiency of the state’s transportation system and solve challenging structural engineering problems.
Manage the state’s highway and rail bridge inventory, including span poles, mast arms, large highway sign structures, and hi‑mast lighting.
Follow projects through construction, review contractor‑developed drawings, facilitate construction, ensure contract compliance, and support resolution of unforeseen conditions.
Design state bridges and overhead traffic structures, produce safe, efficient and aesthetic structures, and develop/maintain bridge design standards for state and consultant engineers.
Conduct bridge structural analysis to determine remedial action, safe posting limits, effective resource use for rehabilitation or replacement, assist in permit vehicle reviews, and satisfy FHWA requirements for load ratings in accordance with the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or related discipline.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, and other duties as required.
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; Engineer in Training licensure acceptable.
Experience with bridge design, load rating, and project management in a governmental or public‑sector setting.

$103,150–$145,219 per year (new state employees start at the minimum).
