Role Summary
Barry McTiernan & Moore’s Manhattan office is currently seeking an experienced Attorney to join our General Litigation group. This role is ideal for an attorney with a strong background in New York General Municipal Law. Candidates with experience handling false arrest, police misconduct, and civil rights matters are strongly encouraged to apply. The position offers the opportunity to take ownership of a high‑volume 50‑hour caseload, develop early case strategy, and play a critical role in shaping the defense of claims at their inception.

Responsibilities

Independently manage and conduct a high volume of 50‑hour hearings on behalf of municipal clients, including thorough preparation, strategic questioning of claimants, and preservation of testimony.

Develop early case assessments and defense strategies based on 50‑hour testimony and supporting documentation.

Handle matters involving a wide range of general liability and municipal defense cases, including trip and fall and slip and fall incidents, motor vehicle accidents, correctional facility‑related claims, false arrest, and assault.

Review and analyze Notices of Claim, police reports, accident reports, medical records, and other relevant materials in advance of hearings.

Identify liability issues, inconsistencies, and potential defenses during claimant examinations.

Collaborate with clients and internal teams to report on hearing outcomes and recommend next steps.

Represent clients in all phases of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and court appearances.

Attend court conferences, depositions, and hearings as needed.

Draft discovery demands and responses, motions, case evaluations, pleadings, and legal memoranda in compliance with client guidelines.

Maintain meticulous compliance with firm and client billing and reporting requirements.

Requirements

Must be admitted in New York; admission in New Jersey is a plus.

Minimum of three years of experience practicing as an attorney in New York in the areas of premises liability, accident, and defense of officer misconduct (municipal legal defense is a plus).

Experience in handling 50‑hour hearings, including preparation, examination, and post‑hearing analysis.

Strong familiarity with New York General Municipal Law, CPLR, and municipal defense procedures.

Experience with cases involving false arrest, police misconduct, excessive force, or civil rights claims is highly preferred.

Proven ability to manage a high‑volume caseload and meet strict deadlines.

Strong oral advocacy skills, particularly in conducting examinations and developing testimony.

Experience drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery materials.

Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.

Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and driven with a commitment to excellence.

Proficient in Lexis.
