HVAC Plant Technician - Public Works

About This Position
The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

This position seeks an HVAC Plant Technician responsible for overseeing the preventative maintenance program and operation of building automation systems for occupied space comfort, as well as operating, maintaining, overhauling, and repairing a variety of HVAC and mechanical equipment in City of Phoenix buildings.

Responsibilities

Supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, Building Maintenance Workers, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions from a Building Equipment Supervisor.

Leading and giving technical directions to employees.

Prioritizing work assignments.

Operating equipment according to manuals, directions, specifications, or warning signals.

Interpreting performance charts and control panels that reflect the efficiency of each piece of equipment in the system.

Positions are second shift (1:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.) or third shift (11:00 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.). Weekly working schedules consist of Sunday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Saturday.

Ideal Candidate
Ability to use various tools and equipment such as general mechanic tools, conveyor belt lacer, Volt Ohm Meter (VOM), and metal fabricating tools.

Salary
Pay Range: $31.82 to $42.64 per hour.

Hiring Range: $31.82 to $40.61 per hour.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.

Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, license, training, and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of journey level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large, modern refrigeration and heating systems.

Supplemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

One year of experience in Residential and Commercial Installation and Replacement.

One year of experience in Building Energy Management Systems.

One year of experience as a supervisor or team lead.

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.

Some positions require the use of personal or city vehicles on city business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for city business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a city vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Work And Environmental Conditions

Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

Movement of objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Possess a Universal EPA certification.

Journey level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large, modern refrigeration and heating systems.

Experience With

Leading or supervising employees.

MS Office applications (e.g., Word and Excel).

Residential and commercial HVAC installation, replacement, and repair.

Chillier plant maintenance and repair.

Sheetmetal and ductwork.

Building Energy Management systems (BMMS).

Performing maintenance and repair on air‑cooled and water‑cooled chillers.
