Job Overview
Under minimal guidance, the Building Engineer oversees and conducts maintenance and repair of specific, regulated American Red Cross buildings in the Los Angeles County area. The role involves planning building systems, electricity, equipment repair, building design, and general maintenance. This position reports to the Pomona facility and may require up to 15% travel.

Salary Range (CA): $101,400‑$108,000 per year.

Key Responsibilities

Act as onsite subject matter expert on building engineering, advising on building systems, electricity, equipment repair, building design, and general maintenance.

Perform a variety of service work in specialized building systems such as mechanical, electrical/electronic, hydraulics, carpentry, or machine servicing. Assist in operations and maintenance issues, troubleshooting, and problem solving as required.

Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on all HVAC equipment and related machinery.

Ensure all regulatory operations meet the minimum compliance standards. Maintain ongoing regulated training and role‑specific training in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Enforce organization safety policies, regulations, and procedures related to facilities management. Perform facility safety and fire extinguisher inspections, schedule fire drills, maintain safety documentation, oversee emergency generator, and issue security access cards. Monitor security surveillance system and equipment as needed.

Oversee and maintain facility maintenance work‑order system, including coordination and timely submission of work orders and providing maintenance dispatch for emergency requests.

Provide administrative support, including coordination of preventative maintenance schedules, ordering department supplies, recording and logging maintenance, and submitting work orders. Maintain accurate operational logs of equipment in building.

May receive regulated supplies and oversee bio‑waste pick‑ups, supplies, and destruction manifests.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent trade school certificate. Current Universal Refrigerant license, OSHA 10, and HVAC certification required. ASHE membership or ability to obtain preferred.

Experience: Minimum seven years of related experience, preferably in laboratory, hospital setting, SDS, or CGMP controlled environments.

Skills & Abilities: Operate independently with initiative and minimal supervision. Competent in electrical and plumbing knowledge. Basic working knowledge of emergency power generators. Ability to assess building envelope. Familiar with NFPA, building codes, NEC, PMs, and PM management systems. Experience with training teams, capital project forecasting, and annual budgets. Previous relationship management with vendors, partners, and suppliers. Ability to read MEP and wiring diagrams. Team work ability.

Travel: May involve some travel.

Combination of education and experience may satisfy requirements as long as total years meet minimum, with no substitution of management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Intermediate computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.

Experience collaborating effectively across multiple teams and functions.

Certified electrician or general experience in electrical work.

Project management experience desirable.

Physical Requirements
The physical demands described include regular sitting, hand usage, verbal communication, reaching, occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Work environment includes moderate noise in a small cubicle and requires prolonged computer use.
