Job Description
An Ingalls Pipe Welder is responsible for performing pipe welding procedures on stainless steel and copper-nickel pipe using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), also known as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) (“stick welding”), and Flux‑Core Arc Welding (FCAW) (“wire welding”). The shipyard environment operates around the clock, with work at different heights, confined spaces, varying weather conditions, and multiple shifts.
Must Have
Minimum 3 years of pipe welding experience
Willingness and ability to work any assigned shift
Experience in GTAW (TIG), SMAW (“stick welding”)
Ability to pass military‑standard X‑ray welding test on stainless steel and copper‑nickel in the 6G (restricted) position
Ability to pass a military specification welding assessment in the vertical (3G), horizontal (2G), and overhead (4G) positions
Pipe welding test given in a restricted position (6G) on a 5″ schedule 80 carbon steel pipe
Use of GTAW (TIG) for root pass, 11018 electrode for weld fill portion and cap
