Summary
The City of Chicopee's Building Department is hiring a Local Building Inspector who enforces the provisions of the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR), the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (521 CMR), and the City of Chicopee ordinances for the safety and protection of the general public.
Essential Duties
Enforce all provisions of 780 CMR, 521 CMR and other state statutes, rules, regulations, city ordinances or bylaws that empower the building official.
Act on any questions related to mode or manner of construction, materials, and building integrity for construction, reconstruction, alterations, repair, demolition, removal, installation of equipment, and location, use, occupancy and maintenance of all structures.
Receive applications and issue permits for construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, demolition, removal or change in use or occupancy of buildings and structures; inspect premises for which permits have been issued and enforce compliance with 780 CMR.
Issue necessary notices or orders to ensure compliance with 780 CMR.
Inspect and investigate all zoning issues as assigned by the building commissioner.
Assist permit applicants with application forms and requirements; review permit applications and plans for completeness and code compliance.
Issue building permits in a timely manner and schedule and perform on‑site inspections of building projects.
Schedule and perform Section 110.7 periodic inspections of businesses and institutions; keep up with relevant code changes.
Maintain fair, objective, professional standards; maintain records and relevant information in a readily available manner.
Provide customer service in person, by phone, email, or other means; perform similar or related work as required.
Present oneself in a courteous and professional manner.
Qualifications
Certification as a municipal building code enforcement official, with approval to take the local inspector exams (see https://www.mass.gov/doc/application-for-certification-as-a-building-code-enforcement-official-0/download).
Familiarity with personal computers and Microsoft Office.
Basic filing skills and blueprint reading.
Customer service skills.
Advanced math skills and basic writing skills.
Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.
Employment Details
Local Building Inspector Department: Building Employment Status: Non‑Exempt, UFCW Admin; Full‑Time (35 Hours/Week). Salary: Grade A09, Step 01 – $26.06 / Hour – $34.34 / Hour. Schedule: Monday‑Friday 7 :00 AM – 3 :00 PM.
