Job Description
The Steel Detailer produces precise, fabrication-ready shop drawings and erection drawings based on provided design documents for steel platework and structural steel projects. This role focuses on translating engineering designs into clear, accurate details that support efficient shop fabrication and field erection, while ensuring a strong emphasis on quality, accuracy, and constructability.
Responsibilities
+ Produce detailed shop drawings from provided design drawings to support steel platework and structural steel fabrication.
+ Detail typical components such as support steel, platework, panels, stairs, and walkway access to a high level of accuracy.
+ Generate clear, accurate erection drawings to guide job site assembly and installation.
+ Create material cut lists and burn table templates from design drawings for use in the fabrication shop.
+ Apply knowledge of basic AISC standard connections and detail connections based on engineer-provided loads when applicable.
+ Interpret and clarify design drawings, specifications, and engineering notes to ensure constructible and fabrication-ready details.
+ Collaborate and communicate clearly in English with internal teams to resolve design or detailing questions.
+ Use AutoCAD with an emphasis on 2D detailing to prepare drawings, while leveraging any 3D experience when beneficial.
+ Check and verify dimensions, quantities, and details to ensure accuracy and completeness before release to the shop or field.
+ Use strong math skills and problem-solving abilities to identify and resolve potential conflicts or issues in the design.
+ Maintain organized drawing files, cut lists, and documentation to support smooth fabrication and erection workflows.
Essential Skills
+ At least 5+ years of experience in steel platework fabrication and/or structural steel fabrication industries.
+ Proficiency in AutoCAD with a strong emphasis on 2D detailing.
+ Experience as a steel detailer working with structural steel and fabricated components.
+ Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, including welding and bolting.
+ Excellent math skills to support accurate detailing, measurements, and calculations.
+ High level of attention to detail to ensure precise and error-free drawings.
+ Strong problem-solving capabilities to identify and resolve design and detailing challenges.
+ Clear communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience generating burn table templates and material cut lists for fabrication.
+ Ability to detail basic AISC standard connections based on engineer-provided loads.
+ 3D AutoCAD or related 3D detailing experience is beneficial.
+ Vocational training in drafting is preferred, but not required with a strong proven work history in relevant roles.
+ Background in drafting, design, or related technical disciplines.
+ Familiarity with structural steel and platework terminology, standards, and best practices.
Work Environment
This is an in-office position based in an environment that includes both office and shop interaction, offering close collaboration with fabrication operations. The role does not require travel. You will primarily work at a workstation using AutoCAD and related drafting tools to produce detailed drawings and documentation. The setting supports direct communication with shop personnel to ensure that drawings are practical and fabrication-ready. Standard office attire is appropriate, with additional safety-conscious attire as needed when visiting shop areas. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $36.00/hr.
