Summary / Objective
The Controller is responsible for leading core accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting. This role supports the development and execution of financial practices and resource management strategies, partnering closely with senior leadership and a centralized finance function on planning, budgeting, cash flow visibility, and policy execution. The Controller builds strong cross‑functional relationships and collaborates effectively across all departments, including Payroll and HR, while maintaining a disciplined, controls‑driven, and risk‑aware approach to daily, monthly, and quarterly responsibilities. This leader is detail‑oriented, results‑driven, and adept at managing multiple competing priorities in a fast‑paced, project‑driven environment, viewing challenges as opportunities to improve processes and guide the accounting team. The position requires strong ownership of construction‑focused accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and project‑based cost accounting.
Responsibilities / Duties
Ensure efficient policies, procedures, and appropriate internal controls are established and maintained
Review journal entries and account and bank reconciliations
Maintain a disciplined month‑end close calendar and ensure compliance with GAAP and internal policies
Lead the month‑end close process and coordinate the closing of the company’s accounting records
Report financial results in accordance with GAAP and established financial and accounting policies
Percentage of Completion Accounting (Construction)
Develop and maintain effective percentage‑of‑completion forecasting capabilities
Assess adequacy of resource deployment relative to active project schedules and workload
Ensure accurate cost accumulation at the project level
Oversee construction project accounting from initiation through closeout
Prepare and analyze monthly reporting including WIP, over/under billings, gross margin, revenue recognition, revenue projections, work‑shift impacts, forecast adjustments, earnings fade/gain, and preconstruction costs
Project Forecasting
Partner with project managers and operations leadership to ensure accurate job cost reporting
Provide financial insight to support project performance and forecast accuracy
Escalate risks related to margin performance or unfavorable cost trends
Cash Management
Oversee cash inflows and outflows, including collections, to maintain a strong liquidity position
Audits
Partner with external auditors on annual audits and ad‑hoc insurance, tax, project, fringe benefit, and sales tax audits
Ensure timely communication and accurate documentation, including “Prepared by Client” schedules
Transaction Processing & Team Management
Manage and/or supervise accounts receivable, accounts payable, job costing, general ledger, and contract administration
Partner with Payroll and HR to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and aligned operational workflows
Oversee construction billing, WIP, cost accounting, fixed assets, and general ledger activities, coordinating closely with Operations
Monthly Performance Review
Maintain KPI dashboards and lead monthly analytical reviews of operational and financial performance, including labor efficiency, productivity, margin performance, and cash conversion
Review expense projections and provide recommendations on cost control and resource deployment
Identify and communicate financial trends, risks, and opportunities to leadership
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
Support the annual planning and budgeting process, including preparation, consolidation, and leadership review
Provide financial schedules and analysis to support management decision‑making
Lead ad‑hoc operational and financial analyses and prepare management reports as requested
ERP / Systems
Support the implementation of new ERP tools as needed
Utilize and optimize Sage to improve accuracy, reporting, and process efficiency
Strengthen system controls, standardization, and data integrity
Education / Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
7+ years of accounting experience, with construction industry experience strongly preferred
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
CPA preferred
Strong financial analysis, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills
Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Strong follow‑through, customer service mindset, and responsiveness
Effective communicator and relationship‑builder across teams and functions
Demonstrated success developing teams and applying strong leadership and talent‑development practices
Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Experience with Sage 300 CRE preferred; OneStream a plus; broader construction ERP experience strongly preferred
