Assistant Controller

We are partnering with a growing consumer packaged goods (CPG) company headquartered in Chicago to hire an Assistant Controller. This role will support the Controller and CFO in overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance for a dynamic organization with SEC reporting requirements. The ideal candidate brings a blend of public accounting experience and hands-on corporate accounting exposure and thrives in a fast-paced, operational environment.
Key Responsibilities

Assist with the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with US GAAP
Support SEC reporting requirements, including 10-Ks, 10-Qs, and related disclosures
Serve as a key liaison with external auditors and advisors, supporting audit planning, execution, and timely completion
Manage and support the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis
Partner with cross-functional teams (FP&A, Sales, Operations, Supply Chain) to ensure accurate financial reporting and insights
Assist with technical accounting research and implementation of new accounting standards
Support inventory accounting, cost of goods sold (COGS), and margin analysis in a CPG environment
Help maintain and enhance internal controls, SOX compliance, and documentation
Contribute to process improvements, automation initiatives, and scalability as the business grows
Coach and develop accounting staff; review work for accuracy and timeliness
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
8–10+ years of progressive accounting experience
Public accounting background required (Big 4 or national firm preferred), combined with corporate accounting experience
Prior exposure to SEC reporting and public company environments
Experience in consumer products, manufacturing, or distribution strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and audit processes
ERP experience required (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or similar)
Advanced Excel skills; ability to analyze and interpret large data sets
Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable operating in an onsite, collaborative environment
