Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Salary to be commensurate with experience; hiring range is $22.70 - $28.38/hour.

Overview: The Water Utility Damage Prevention Technician assists with monitoring oversight for the Aurora Water Raw Water Infrastructure Systems and supports projects affecting critical infrastructure to ensure compliance with city standards, safety requirements, and applicable regulations.

Infrastructure Defense: Act as a technician in the Watch & Protect program, conducting driving inspections and standby observations to prevent unauthorized or unsafe work on the city’s raw water systems.

Compliance & Enforcement: Verify that all contractors have valid license agreements and locates on-site before breaking ground. Authorized to halt work when safety requirements or permit conditions are not met.

Construction Oversight: Monitor in-progress utility crossing projects, ensuring each phase complies with city codes, project plans, and safety regulations.

Field Collaboration: Participate in site walk-throughs with contractors and provide real-time updates to supervisors to resolve issues before they escalate.

Accurate Reporting: Maintain meticulous logs and digital files to track inspections, communications with other city departments, and project milestones.

Technical Support: Perform miscellaneous field tasks, including gathering site data and supporting special projects as needed to maintain system integrity.

Emergency Support: The employee must be able to work overtime and after-hours during emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions
Education:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

Experience:

At least one (1) year of experience in utility construction, excavation work, construction inspection, or construction observation

Knowledge:

Basic knowledge of water utility infrastructure, construction practices, utility damage prevention practices, workplace safety on construction sites, applicable city codes and procedures, and recordkeeping practices.

Skills:

Observing construction activities, maintaining field notes and logs, clear communication with contractors and city staff, reading simple construction drawings/maps, and using field technology (tablets, cameras, basic software).

Abilities:

Establish and maintain working relationships; monitor activities for impacts to infrastructure; verify documentation and locate markings; follow procedures and exercise judgment on unsafe
on-compliant work; write detailed reports.

Licenses & Certifications:

Valid Colorado driver’s license and ability to operate a city vehicle or meet transportation requirements of the position.

Working Conditions
Essential Personnel:

When a local emergency or disaster is declared, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

Medium physical work with lifting up to 50 pounds; frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; regular walking and standing; bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing; ability to operate a vehicle for field inspections; ability to review plans with or without reasonable accommodation; ability to communicate in field environments with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Environment:

Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and terrains; exposure to construction environments and varying conditions.

Equipment Used:

Operates motor vehicles, field tablets, and PCs; uses measuring equipment; may require using personal equipment occasionally.

The City of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for 2026 with scheduled dates: January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
