Responsibilities

Candidate will have a minimum of 5+ years of experience performing structural layout and positioning of steel components on large weldments based on the engineering supplied DWGs.

5+ years experience in rigging/millwright background to facilitate safe handling and flipping of large weldments in the shop using jib and bridge cranes.

Comfortable working in a structural steel shop with multiple welding stations, coordinating fitment of items on other structural weldments from other departments.

Expert at layout using appropriate tools such as squares, tape measures, lasers, stringline, torpedo levels, combination squares, angle finders, etc.

Proficient in the math required daily to assure weldments are correctly positioned, square, and level.

5+ years welding experience, capable of MIG welding various wire thicknesses and specialized wires (e.g., hard facing) to pass internal weld tests and perform multi‑pass welds per welding standards.

Good communication skills in a loud shop environment. Willing to follow instructions from leads and supervisors.

Team player with safety as a top priority.

Capable of completing all tasks within the estimated fabrication schedule and justifying hours spent on each weldment.

Capable of recognizing good and bad welds per Mellott Standards and taking corrective action before QA inspections.

Qualifications

Participates in safety toolbox meetings.

Assists manager, foreman, or superintendent as directed.

Competent to perform layout using drawings, sketches, and verbal instruction.

Competent in reading measuring tools (tape, scale, angle finder, protractor, square) to 1/16 or 1 mm as drawings require.

Understands square and tolerance requirements when fabricating.

Competent with MIG/Stick/TIG welding and general welding machine set‑up.

Can interpret written directions and specifications.

Operates forklift, telehandler, manlift, overhead crane, metal saw, press brake, iron worker, etc.

Trained in basic rigging principles and techniques.

Willing to work out‑of‑town for up to two weeks at a time, as required.

Comfortable working off hours or overtime to complete a project.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED.

Willingness to pursue apprenticeship training or other job‑skills training offered by the company.

AWS D1.1 welding certification, or the willingness to undergo testing to obtain it.

Basic first aid training.

Walking – 95% of shift

Lifting up to 50 pounds – 20% of shift

Other Requirements

Ability to travel up to two weeks at a time.

Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and a pre‑employment physical exam.

Work Environment
Work takes place in a climate‑controlled shop. The job is performed in a loud environment and may involve hot or cold temperatures. Exposure to fumes or chemicals is possible. Personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and steel‑toe boots are required on the shop floor.
