Engineering Assistant 2/3 – Intelligent Transportation Systems Technician
Base Salary:
Engineering Assistant 2 – $38.91 per hour (OT eligible). Engineering Assistant 3 – $44.49 per hour (OT eligible).
Location:
Fairbanks, Alaska
What you will be doing
Monitor and support daily operations of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) across Alaska.
Help manage field devices including cameras, sensors, and communication systems.
Incorporate new data sources to improve system performance, situational awareness, and traveler information.
Support deployment of new technologies that enhance safety and operational awareness.
Coordinate with maintenance, safety, and IT teams to ensure systems effectively support the traveling public.
Contribute to expanding statewide capabilities that support winter operations, incident response, and traveler information (e.g., 511).

Qualifications
Core competencies:
Engineering and Technology : Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices; mechanical and electrical equipment and tools.
Transportation Engineering : Knowledge of design, analysis, and construction of transportation systems.
Problem Solving : Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations.
Information Technology Program Management : Knowledge of managing IT programs and coordinating multiple IT projects.
Required qualifications for Engineering Assistant 2:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution; OR
One year of entry‑level engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent; OR
Bachelor’s degree not ABET‑accredited plus an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate; OR
Five years of progressively responsible sub‑professional engineering experience, including two years as a Journey‑level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may substitute for required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours = one month of experience).
Required qualifications for Engineering Assistant 3:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution; OR
Two years of engineering experience, including one year at the working or intermediate trainee level (e.g., Engineering Assistant 2). OR
Bachelor’s degree from a non‑ABET institution plus an EIT certificate; OR
Four years of post‑secondary education plus or substitute professional experience; OR
Graduate study may substitute for required experience.
Special note: A valid driver’s license is required.
