
Part Time Wood and Metal Shop Technician

Job Description
The School of Visual Arts Wood and Metal Working Shop is seeking a Part‑Time Wood & Metal Shop Technician to support safe and effective shop operations during predominantly evening hours. This position assists undergraduate and graduate students with the safe operation of woodworking and metalworking equipment, helps maintain a clean and organized shop environment, and supports fabrication needs for student and departmental projects. The technician reports directly to the Shop Manager. Training will be provided.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist undergraduate and graduate students in the safe operation of woodworking and metalworking tools and machinery
Support safe work practices related to both cold work and hot work processes (cutting, forming, shaping, fabrication)
Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe shop environment through routine cleaning and organization
Perform basic daily equipment maintenance, including vacuuming machines, disposing of debris, and emptying dust collection systems
Monitor equipment condition and report safety concerns, maintenance needs, and inventory issues to the Shop Manager
Help maintain machinery and shop equipment (including changing blades, sanding belts, pads, and other consumables as needed)
Open and close the shop facility during scheduled shifts
Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students regarding shop policies, safety procedures, and shop usage
Assist with the design and construction of projects, including equipment and furniture for the art department
Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
Knowledge of safe operation of woodworking and metalworking tools and equipment
Comfortable working in a shop environment and supporting others in safe machine use
Strong communication skills and ability to work professionally with students, faculty, and staff
Reliable, organized, and attentive to detail with a commitment to maintaining a safe workspace
Willingness to learn, follow shop procedures, and complete required training
Ability to work predominantly evening and/or weekend hours and a consistent weekly schedule
Background Checks and Clearances
