Summary
A member of the Nursing Department who, under the direct supervision and with consultation of a professional licensed nurse, performs a variety of support services to assist the professional nursing staff and optimize patient care.

Responsibilities
Acute Care
Prepare charts for new patients, including I/O sheets, and maintain chart packs.
File lab and x‑ray reports, record information on flow sheets, and file overflow.
Prepare charts for patients who have been discharged and forward them to Medical Records.
Maintain lists of patients on hold for lab, x‑ray, or pre‑op.
Begin referral forms by entering available clerical data when warranted.
Photocopy patient records when transferred to another health facility.
Obtain old records from Medical Records for Acute Care (ICU and OBS) when asked.
Complete daily dietary sheet, make changes when appropriate, and notify the Dietary Department.
Perform other necessary clerical duties or errands.
Receive incoming and outgoing telephone calls and forward messages accurately.
Provide assistance and direction to visitors when indicated.
Picks up and distributes patient mail for the unit.
Cover hospital phones by accepting transfer from the switchboard when closed.
Familiar with CODE 4 and Fire & Disaster plans to act appropriately.
Maintain a positive atmosphere and communication with all departments.
Transcribe doctor's orders to Kardex, requisitions, and communicate with appropriate departments.
Bring STAT orders to the attention of the charge nurse immediately.
Assist with patient transport arrangements with Social Service Department or Nursing Supervisor.
Maintain bulletin boards, blackboards, charting areas, and storage areas, keeping halls clear of wheelchairs and stretchers.
Order supplies as necessary to meet unit needs, including paper/form supplies.
Deliver specimens, equipment, and requisitions to appropriate departments.
Arrange for patients' personal valuables to be sent home or locked in the Business Office.
Explain and enforce visiting policies for families and friends of patients; direct visitors to waiting areas as appropriate.
Inform nursing staff to schedule x‑ray, lab, or operative procedures.
Maintain confidentiality within the hospital and in the community.
Emergency Department
Prepare ER charts for admission to the hospital.
Maintain adequate evacuation/CVA/MI admission packs.
Know locations of patients when on and off the unit.
File lab and x‑ray requisitions.
Maintain log book on unit, forwarding charts for coding as soon as possible.
Assist ER receptionist with obtaining admitting information and register patients when receptionist is absent.
Photocopy patient records when transferred to health facilities off the island.
Perform other necessary clerical duties or errands.
Receive and proceed telephone calls, evaluate priority, forward messages, and coordinate with other facilities when needed.
Maintain positive atmosphere and communication with all departments.
Answer C‑Med radio calls and relay information to licensed staff as needed.
Transcribe doctors' orders, requisitions, and communicate with appropriate departments.
Arrange patient transport arrangements with Nursing Supervisor.
Maintain bulletin boards, blackboards, and charting areas.
Order supplies as necessary.
Deliver specimens, equipment, and requisitions to appropriate departments.
Arrange for patient's personal valuables to be sent home or locked in the Business Office.
Explain and enforce visiting policies for families and friends of patients; direct visitors to waiting areas as appropriate.

Surgical Services
Prepare charts for all patients and stamp/prep pathology paperwork.
Maintain adequate supply of pathology packs.
File lab and x‑ray reports.
Photocopy as directed by the Clinical Coordinator.
Obtain old records from Medical Records for next‑day surgery.
Perform other necessary clerical duties or errands.
Prepare charts for patients who have been discharged and forward them to Medical Records when needed.
Receive and forward telephone calls accurately.
Assist family members as needed.
Be familiar with Code 4 and Fire & Disaster plans for the OR and CSR.
Maintain positive atmosphere and communication with all departments.
Takes bookings for cases and documents information in a schedule book.
Transcribe approved bookings and perform other related duties.
Enter information into the OR log book.
Assist with patient charges.
Prepare and distribute next‑day schedule sheets.
Maintain any log or study as needed.
Ensure appropriate pre‑op lab work, H&P, EKG, and x‑rays are in chart 48 hours pre‑op or notify Clinical Coordinator.
Data entry on computer for OR time schedules and OR database.
Maintain bulletin boards, blackboards, charting areas, storage and conference areas.
Order supplies as necessary.
Deliver specimens, equipment, and requisitions to appropriate departments.
Transport patients via wheelchair and assist with stretcher transport.
Maintain confidentiality within the hospital and in the community.

Education and Experience Required
High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Previous hospital experience preferred (0–1 year). No experience in lieu of an education.
Licenses and Credentials
No specific licensure required beyond the Nursing Department supervision structure.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Legible handwriting and accurate spelling; knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Read, write, and speak English clearly and understand spoken English.
Make independent decisions in timely fashion when circumstances warrant.
Tactfully deal with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
Work harmoniously with professional and non‑professional personnel and the general public.
Meditech knowledge desired.
