Position Overview
Legal Examiner Supervisor (LE 4) DOH8883 – hybrid arrangement: remote work with 1–2 days onsite at the Department of Health facility in Tumwater, WA.

The Opportunity
The division of Health Systems Quality Assurance (HSQA), Office of Investigative and Legal Services (OILS) seeks an experienced legal professional to lead and support the delivery of high‑quality legal services that protect Washington residents. The role reports to the Executive Director of Legal Services and includes supervisory responsibilities for a team of legal examiners.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision

Plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise the work of Legal Examiner 3s.

Ensure equitable caseload distribution and timely case progression while managing a high‑level caseload.

Review work products to maintain legal accuracy, consistency, and quality.

Legal Expertise & Case Oversight

Serve as legal subject matter expert for assigned healthcare professions.

Participate in Case Management Teams for discipline matters.

Provide expert consultation on complex disciplinary cases and regulatory interpretation.

Policy, Legislative & Program Consultation

Provide consultation to representatives of other agencies and respond to information requests.

Support legislative review, bill analysis, and policy development efforts.

Attend meetings and workgroups to represent legal services and ensure alignment with regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications
You must meet one of the following options:

Option 1: Three (3) years of experience at the Legal Examiner 3 level.

Option 2: Graduation from an accredited law school (or the Law Clerk Program) AND five (5) years of legal practice that includes litigation experience.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Experience

2 or more years of supervisory experience.

Must be a member of the Washington State Bar Association.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the Uniform Disciplinary Act, related case law, and agency statutes.

Knowledge of administrative law and procedure, the rules of evidence, civil procedure, constitutional law, and public disclosure laws.

Two or more years of litigation experience in civil, criminal, or administrative settings.

Working Conditions
Work Setting

Regular in‑person attendance 1–2 days per week at the Tumwater DOH office; otherwise work may be remote.

Typical indoor office environment with computer use for extended periods.

May involve moving files up to 35 pounds.

Schedule

Full‑time 40 hours per week; overtime possible to meet deadlines or during legislative session.

Travel Requirements

Quarterly travel to meetings, training, and other state agencies.

May involve multi‑day, interstate travel.

Must be able to operate a vehicle or provide alternative transportation.

Standard office furniture and equipment (desk, chair, computer, etc.) and occasional use of printer, phone, fax, copier.

Frequent meetings with internal and external partners; may involve challenging communication due to regulatory nature.
