Responsibilities

Maintain the building and facilities of a child care center in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition.

Sweep, dust, vacuum, or mop floors, steps, ramps, blacktop, and walkways.

Spot clean and shampoo carpeting.

Clean sinks, toilets, and other sanitary facilities.

Wash windows, woodwork, walls, tables, ledges, blinds, and other center equipment.

Replace light bulbs as needed.

Set out and stack cots.

Sweep or hose walkways and outside play areas.

Clean stove hoods.

Collect, carry out, and dispose of trash, garbage, and clean containers.

Maintain the center’s custodial and equipment storage areas.

Make minor repairs; report needed maintenance and repair.

Check fire extinguishers.

Turn off lights, lock doors, and set alarms.

Report incidents of vandalism, theft, and fire.

Make preliminary supply orders.

Keep required records.

Perform emergency cleaning when necessary.

Assist in preparing sites for meetings.

May perform site surveillance work at a differential rate of pay as needed.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Training, Education, and Experience:

Graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the required knowledge and abilities. Custodial experience preferred.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

Personality and character suitable to work in schools; employment eligibility, which may include fingerprints, tuberculosis testing, and/or other employment clearance.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:

Basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques; cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment; safe working methods and procedures.

Abilities:

Efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment.

Read, write, and understand directions in English.

Make minor repairs.

Complete simple reports.

Lift and move heavy objects.

Work around children.

Establish and maintain working relationships with center staff.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Perform simple and repetitive tasks.

Working Conditions
Environment:

Indoor and outdoor environment; driving a vehicle for work; exposure to chemicals related to cleaning; seasonal heat, cold, or adverse weather conditions; working around machinery with moving parts.

Physical Demands:

Dexterity of hands and fingers; sight; reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects; standing for extended periods; performing heavy physical labor.
