Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description

The role of the Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer is to develop concepts and well‑engineered mechanical designs for mechanisms used in automated assembly systems. Use CAD to produce layouts, parts, assemblies, detail drawings, and bill of materials. Work with other project team members to meet or exceed the customer’s expectations regarding function, quality and schedule and extend effort and commitment to meet schedules. Adhere to all established procedures as defined by ATS Quality Procedures, Process Flows, Work Instructions, Safety Procedures, and the Employee Handbook.
Specific Responsibilities
Design cam, servo, and air operated stations and make changes to existing designs. Execute cam (drive) design.
Ensure the design is functional, robust, and cost effective.
Innovate and use good judgment to incorporate ATS standards and regulatory requirements.
Set and maintain departmental goals in keeping with company objectives.
Support and participate in quality management program.
Create detail drawings, assembly drawings, bill of materials, organize release packages, and update drawings.
Participate in internal and customer design reviews.
Prepare pneumatic and timing diagrams and select appropriate sensors.
Work with suppliers to find/develop the most functional and economical solutions to design issues.
Work under the confines of the project schedule and budget.
Problem‑solve design or detail issues and update all appropriate documentation.
Communicate ideas and comprehend information both verbally and in written form.
Follow all policy and procedures to adhere to ISO 9001 certification requirements.
Help guide and mentor Level I Mechanical Engineers with the execution of their designs and projects.
Keep abreast of current product developments.
Full compliance with the employee’s signed work‑from‑home policy.
Provide necessary documentation and support for machinery operating manuals.
Travel or extend workday if required.
Qualifications
College degree in mechanical engineering, technology or equivalent experience.
Two to six (2‑6) years of automation experience.
Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD, 3D Solid Works or similar CAD systems.
Proficient with computers, including programs such as AutoCAD, Solid Works, Microsoft Office suite, etc.
Able to operate fax machines, copiers, printers/plotters, etc.
Proficient with inspection and measuring tools such as scales, calipers, micrometers, etc.
Job Specifications
The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
Visual Acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens.
Hearing Ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.
Working Conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and or physical hazards when visiting the manufacturing floor.
Health, Safety, & Environmental (HSE) Requirements
Work in compliance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures.
Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout–tagout methods.
Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
Report defect in any equipment or protective device.
Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for the assigned tasks.
Attend all required health, safety and environmental training.
Report any accidents/incidents to supervisor.
Assist in investigating accidents/incidents.
Refrain from engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.
