Job Description
The role of the Mechanical Engineer II is to conceptualize and design automated equipment according to customer and internal specifications. The position may serve as Mechanical Engineering Lead on small to medium‑size machines ($550K - $1.5M) or any size replication project.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Primary
Design cam, servo, and air‑operated stations and modify existing designs.
Execute cam (drive) design.
Ensure designs are functional, robust, and cost‑effective.
Innovate and incorporate ATS Life Sciences Chicago standards and regulatory requirements.
Research and specify appropriate materials and purchased components.
Create detail drawings, assembly drawings, bill of materials, and update drawings.
Participate in internal and customer design reviews.
Prepare pneumatic and timing diagrams and select appropriate sensors.
Work with suppliers to find/develop economical solutions to design issues.
Work within the project schedule and budget.
Problem‑solve design or detail issues and update documentation.
Communicate ideas and comprehend information verbally and in writing.
Assimilate well within a team and exhibit objectivity and openness to others’ views.
Follow all policy and procedures to adhere to ISO certification requirements.
Guide and mentor Level I Mechanical Engineers with their design and project execution.
Secondary
Contribute to the development and maintenance of ATS LSS Chicago internal and international standards.
Prioritize, plan, and organize work and workspace.
Full compliance with the employee‑signed work‑from‑home policy.
Set and maintain departmental goals aligned with company objectives.
Support and participate in the quality management program.
Provide necessary documentation and support for machinery operating manuals.
Make recommendations for quality and cost improvements.
Keep abreast of current product developments.
Travel or extend workday if required.
Adhere to ISO standards.
Comply with all ATS Company policies.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
College degree in mechanical engineering, technology, or equivalent experience.
Two to six (2‑6) years of automation experience.
Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD, 3D SolidWorks, or similar CAD systems.
Proficient with computers, including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Microsoft Office suite, etc.
Can operate fax machine, copiers, and printers/plotters.
Proficient with inspection and measuring tools such as scales, calipers, micrometers.
Job Specifications
The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
Visual acuity – normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens.
Hearing ability – normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.
Working conditions – normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting manufacturing floor.
Capable of wearing appropriate related PPE for extended periods of time.
Health, Safety & Environmental
Work in compliance with divisional health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout‑tagout methods.
Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
Report defect in any equipment or protective device.
Ensure that required protective equipment is used for assigned tasks.
Attend all required health, safety, and environmental training.
Report any accidents/incidents to supervisor.
Assist in investigating accidents/incidents.
Refrain from engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running, or rough and boisterous conduct.
