
Legal Administrative Assistant II

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is seeking a Legal Administrative Assistant II in our Charlottesville, VA office. This individual will join our administrative team and report to our Virginia Office Manager. The Legal Administrative Assistant II will have a full range of legal support responsibilities, including court-related filings and research tasks. In addition, the legal assistant may assist with various administrative duties to ensure efficient and well-organized office operations. SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
Primary Responsibilities
Provides legal support to SELC attorneys, which may include preparing and submitting filings in state and federal courts, utility commissions, and before federal and state agencies; researching local court rules; proofreading and editing legal documents; preparing attachments and exhibits; and supporting other litigation‑related tasks.
Maintains files including pleadings, transcripts, memos, and correspondence; computes and calendars court deadlines.
Assists with the logistical and evidentiary preparations for judicial and administrative proceedings (including depositions, mediations, hearings and trials).
Assists in the collection and review of documents and records obtained through public records requests, including writing summaries or memos.
Performs factual research and synthesizes information into clear, well-organized memos, reports, and fact sheets for use in legal proceedings and policy work.
Assists with PowerPoint presentations for both internal and external presentations.
Communicates with experts, assists with retainer agreements, and submits and tracks invoices.
Arranges travel; assists with coding expenses.
Plans and coordinates meetings and events, including reservations, logistics, and setup/breakdown support.
Provides general administrative support which includes printing, copying, scanning, mailing, and assistance with scheduling meetings and other events.
Participates in and takes notes during conference calls and meetings as needed.
Helps respond to inquiries from the public for legal assistance or representation, as needed.
Assist with backup coverage across the legal assistant team.
Assist with rotating coffee and kitchen duties.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 2 years of litigation support experience.
High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including advanced word processing skills in Word, formatting and formulas in Excel spreadsheets, and creating professional Power Point presentations. Demonstrated aptitude for learning legal-specific software.
Ability to efficiently navigate Adobe Acrobat, including editing PDFs.
Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
Highly dependable and punctual.
Ability to work well both independently and within several different teams.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines.
Cheerful outlook and enthusiasm for both administrative support and substantive tasks.
Desired Qualifications
Advanced degree preferred but not required.
Experience with NetDocs and e-discovery software a plus.

SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package. The wage range for this full‑time and nonexempt position is $27.89/hour - $32.22/hour, based on experience. The annualized equivalent is approximately $58,000 – $67,000, assuming full‑time hours. SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer.
All employees are required to reside in our region. SELC will provide relocation reimbursement up to a specific dollar amount for those relocating at least 50 miles from their current primary residence.
