
Senior Social Worker - Substance Use Disorder

Overview
The Senior Social Worker - Substance Use Disorder practices in the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System (VAECHCS) assigned to the outpatient Substance Use Disorders Clinic under the Mental Health Service. The incumbent participates as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team. This is a multi-discipline announcement and can be filled by either a Psychologist - Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor and Social Worker.
Responsibilities
Senior Social Worker duties include implementing evidence-based treatments within the SUD Clinic.
Provide clinical supervision towards licensure in social work or addictions counseling and represent the SUD Clinic in facility or VISN-level workgroups/committees.
Provide clinical consultation to other members of the workgroup as needed.
Provide administrative and/or clinical coverage in the absence of the Program Manager, Detox/MAT Coordinator, or as clinical needs indicate.
Complete intake and assessment processes and develop treatment plans pertaining to all assessed needs.
Serve as case manager for a panel of patients and address a broad range of needs including physical health, employment, finances, family, social support, and housing.
Provide crisis management and same-day services for Veterans, including referrals for emergency medical treatment, psychiatric evaluation, SUD specialty care, or detoxification as well as coordinating inpatient admissions as needed.
Deliver a range of treatment services for substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders, including individual and group treatment; group treatment includes psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic groups.
Apply evidence-based treatment methods and Motivational Interviewing as clinically indicated; incorporate abstinence and harm reduction approaches as appropriate.
Assess interest in and eligibility for Medication Assisted Therapies and provide referrals for evaluation.
Participate in triage services in daily same-day access clinics and assist with drug and alcohol monitoring in conjunction with psychosocial services.
Maintain timely follow up with Veterans on their caseload who prematurely drop out, in compliance with VA policies and SOPs.
Participate in weekly staff meetings and team huddles; maintain up-to-date charting in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
Ensure documentation meets local, state, and national guidelines and is completed professionally and timely.
Participate in program planning and development; make recommendations for policy or procedure changes as opportunities arise.
Meet continuing education requirements and complete mandatory trainings (including those accessed on the Talent Management System, TMS).
Engage in staff development projects and training programs with other disciplines (psychology, psychiatry, nursing, addiction counseling) as requested.
General knowledge of Veterans' benefits and services relating to special programs, service-connected compensation, and non-service-connected pension.
Facilitate referrals based on veterans' needs and eligibility; may provide services at Community Based Outpatient locations or via Telehealth (VA Video Connect and other technologies).
Work Schedule: 8:00am–4:30pm, Monday–Friday. Telework and virtual status are not available.
Qualifications and Requirements
Basic Requirements
U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
English language proficiency (spoken and written).
Master's degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Verification that the degree meets CSWE accreditation standards.
Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s level.
Current state licensure requirements are described at VA resources; licensure must be maintained without interruption.
Additional qualifications include meeting the grade and experience requirements (GS-0185) and demonstrating advanced practice knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as described in VA qualification standards.
Preferred Experience
Experience providing individual and group psychotherapy to individuals with addictive disorders, including dual diagnosis.

Position is generally sedentary with activities related to counseling and office work; may include long periods of sitting.
