
Payroll Clerk

Must be permanent in the title or reachable on the civil service list. The NYC Law Department is currently seeking a qualified candidate for a Full Time Clerical Associate Level 3 position as Payroll Clerk for its Administration Division’s Payroll Unit. This position encompasses responsible work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility performed under the supervision of the Payroll Supervisor and Chief of Payroll and Timekeeping.
Responsibilities
Payroll Data Entry Processing – one‑time payments/deductions such as Attorney Reimbursements, DOI Fingerprint Processing Fees, Personnel Processing Fees, and Managerial Lump Sum payments.
Data Entry Processing of Employee Elected Deductions – includes applications, cancellations, and changes to TransitCheck/Edenred transportation spending accounts, Direct Deposit, combined municipal contributions, and college savings.
Payroll/Paycheck Verifications – EFT (Direct Deposit) stop‑payment requests and bank reversals, supplemental payroll requests, and processing of undistributed/lost/stolen checks.
Payroll Reports and Verification – review pay detail reports for retro and current payments, prepare/process retro pay triggers, approve payments, review current and previous pay‑cycle event detail reports, request and send transfer of employee time and leave information, ensure all employees receive entitled payments and paychecks, batch and distribute paychecks/stubs.
Collection of Agency Property – employee ID, court ID, etc.; batch and distribute/mail paychecks, pay statements, and other payroll documents; assist employees with payroll inquiries.
Employee Verifications – process verifications for NYCERS/NYS Pension Buy‑backs, NYCHA Wage and Employment, mortgage/loan verifications, employment verifications for child‑care applications, No‑Fault Insurance employer wage verification reports, higher education loan verifications, child support collection verifications, and union
on‑union disability verifications of employees.
Minimum Qualifications
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of satisfactory clerical experience.
Skills Requirement
Keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 keystrokes (20 words) per minute.
Preferred Skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to multitask and work independently. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and various Citywide systems: PMS, CHRMS, RMDS and PI.
