Job Summary
The Automation Estimator will be responsible for the accurate pricing of controls materials, systems, and services for a complete and functional building automation system. Direct responsibilities will include determining costs, analyzing customer requirements, and formulating quotation strategies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Determine costs associated with large scale mechanical projects without the use of drawings, plans or specifications.
Have a working knowledge of various codes (Mechanical Code and local municipal codes).
Have a working knowledge of Title 24 and OSHPD requirements.
Have a working knowledge of BACnet, LON, and Modbus networks and their architecture.
Gather and disseminate market intelligence for each estimate by talking directly with the buyer, the end user, vendors, and other sources of information.
Interpret customer drawings, specifications, and requirements as the basis of formulating quotation strategies.
Work with Estimating, Engineering and Sales Departments to analyze customer requirements and develop a winning strategy for every quotation.
Identify optimum cost/availability of materials acceptable to the customer and prepare material and labor estimates used in the quotation process.
Utilize estimating documentation and electronic programs to prepare bill of material and labor estimate for all quotations.
Prioritize tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
Qualifications
Mechanical Engineering or HVAC experience.
2+ years’ experience estimating/selling in commercial building automation/HVAC.
HVAC take‑off estimating experience is a plus.
Broad understanding of all types of mechanical systems (chillers, boilers, cooling towers, etc.) and HVAC controls systems, including building automation network architecture.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Experience with energy management solutions.
Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and capable of learning and managing internal proprietary systems.
Strong technical writing skills, ability to read and interpret drawings and construction plans.
Attention to detail and excellent teamwork.
Self‑starter who can prioritize tasks and work independently.
Strong negotiating and organizational skills; capable of performing detailed work in a timely manner and following up through order closure and order management throughout the manufacturing process.

Compensation Range: $80,000 - $115,000 per year.
