Overview

Permit Sonoma’s Building Division is responsible for inspecting construction projects after the building permit has been issued. The Division reviews all aspects of a project to ensure they are built according to the approved plans and building codes. Protecting public health and safety is the main focus.
Responsibilities
Building Inspectors work within an assigned geographical area, acquiring the skills needed to perform a variety of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, floodplain, and fire and life safety visual inspections. Building upon professional construction experience, inspectors conduct research, check building plans and layouts for conformance with building codes, county ordinances, and departmental policies, identify deviations during physical inspections, and recommend corrective actions. Inspectors work in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions and drive county vehicles to remote, off‑site locations.
Qualifications
Six or more years of experience in building/construction trades; or experience as a Building Inspector, Construction Supervisor, Architect, or closely related occupation.
Experience effectively applying provisions of the California Building, Housing, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical codes and Fire Safe Standards, and related state and county codes and ordinances.
Proven experience reviewing plans and specifications and identifying any construction that deviates from expectations.
High school graduate; recent academic coursework related to the knowledge and abilities required.
Possession of certification as a combination inspector or two or more specialty trade certificates within one year of appointment; valid California driver’s license.
Strong communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, shift gears quickly in a fast‑paced environment, build and maintain relationships with staff, customers, and the public, and handle challenging situations with integrity.
Considerable knowledge of building codes, fire safe standards, energy conservation, disability access, earthquake safety, flood‑plain regulations, modern building materials, job‑site safety procedures, and electronic information systems.
Ability to read and understand complex residential, commercial, or industrial construction plans; interpret contract documents; write and speak clearly and concisely; make visual inspections; identify violations; recommend solutions; establish effective relationships; use testing equipment; work effectively with minimal supervision; exercise initiative; evaluate situations and identify problems; and communicate effectively.
