MCNCE VISTA- Student Success Coordinator
AmeriCorps, Missoula, MT, United States
Fort Peck Community College (FPCC) serves the people of the Fort Peck Reservation and Northeast Montana by providing quality academic, vocational, and community-based programs to improve the employability and efficiency of students. FPCC empowers students so that they are the next generation of workers, leaders and citizens while preserving and promoting Assiniboine and Sioux Culture. The goal of this project is to bring tribal communities out of poverty by increasing college persistence, retention, transfer and/or graduation rates, which will boost students’ lifetime earning potential and access to stable, high-paying careers. By establishing a permanent infrastructure of mentoring and community resources, it ensures marginalized rural students have the long-term support needed to turn academic success into generational economic mobility. This project will be both supporting new students transition into college at FPCC to persist and graduate, and will be supporting students in the transfer process from FPCC to 4-year institutions. Serving from Fort Peck Community College, the VISTA will help develop the capacity from local, state, and regional entities to support academic success through the establishment of mentoring programs and increase the in kind donations for student success programming. Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to fostering civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across Montana. Led by CEOs from participating institutions, MCNCE works to improve community life and educate students on civic and social responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged leaders.
