Position Summary:
Fort Peck Community College (FPCC) serves the people of the Fort Peck Reservation and Northeast Montana by providing quality academic, vocational, and community-based programs to improve the employability and efficiency of students. FPCC empowers students so that they are the next generation of workers, leaders and citizens while preserving and promoting Assiniboine and Sioux Culture. The goal of this project is to bring tribal communities out of poverty by increasing college persistence, retention, transfer and/or graduation rates, which will boost students’ lifetime earning potential and access to stable, high-paying careers. By establishing a permanent infrastructure of mentoring and community resources, it ensures marginalized rural students have the long-term support needed to turn academic success into generational economic mobility. This project will be both supporting new students transition into college at FPCC to persist and graduate, and will be supporting students in the transfer process from FPCC to 4-year institutions. Serving from Fort Peck Community College, the VISTA will help develop the capacity from local, state, and regional entities to support academic success through the establishment of mentoring programs and increase the in kind donations for student success programming.
The VISTA will conduct a comprehensive needs assessment through surveys and interviews with FPCC staff, students, and community members to identify educational gaps. After analyzing findings to prioritize impactful recommendations, the member will partner with the site supervisor to enhance student success and orientation programming through the creation of an enhanced system & materials. Responsibilities include researching and developing an implementation strategy and evaluation strategy, as well as fundraising to support student services. VISTA member will research and draft relevant grant opportunities that expand student access and success.
Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.
Benefits Include:
$24,962 VISTA Living Allowance (full year) = $957.46 bi-weekly
$7,395 Education Award or $1800 cash award
