Overview

The Grand Prairie City Attorney’s Office is seeking a 3L law student or recent law school graduate who is interested in an opportunity to learn and work with a local government entity, and who qualifies for a Supervised Practice Card under the Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law by Qualified Law Students and Qualified Unlicensed Law School Graduates in Texas. Under the supervision of the Deputy City Attorney and the Lead Municipal Prosecutor, the intern will assist the City Attorney’s Office in prosecution of criminal Class “C” misdemeanor cases in the City’s Municipal Court. Specifically, the intern will assist the Prosecutor’s Office with preparation of cases for Class “C” criminal and civil code violations in the City’s Municipal Court, including both bench and jury trials, preparing for and handling pretrial conferences, plea agreements, preparation of motions, and other legal documents. The intern will also assist with reviewing reports, preparing complaints, interviewing and preparing witnesses for trial, and conducting legal research and drafting legal memoranda on various issues that affect local governments.
Responsibilities

Assist in the preparation of cases for Class “C” criminal and civil code violations in the City’s Municipal Court, including bench and jury trials.
Prepare for and handle pretrial conferences, plea agreements, motions, and other legal documents.
Review reports, prepare complaints, interview and prepare witnesses for trial.
Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda on local government matters.
Qualifications

Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills.
Ability to analyze complex legal issues.
Familiarity with criminal law and a demonstrated interest in trial work is preferred, but not required.
Commit 16-20 hours per week on site; evening meetings may be required.
Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
Compensation

$23.50 per hour (maximum of 440 hours per semester)
Accepted Class Years

3L, recent law school graduate, or other student eligible and meets the requirements to obtain a supervised practice card in accordance with Texas Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law.
