Responsibilities
Byers Engineering, a MasTec company, is seeking a full‑time OSP Designer to support a large‑scale telecommunications project for both OSP Fiber and Copper Networks. The role requires experience with outdoor plant in aerial, buried, and/or underground facilities, and thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local government permitting, as well as pole and conduit licensing procedures with utility permitting agencies. The OSP Engineer must work cohesively with the Engineering PM.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Receive field data, analyze local and wide area network systems, and develop the most cost‑efficient fiber/copper network route design in accordance with customer specifications and guidelines.
Read and understand road prints, utility maps, and as‑builds to identify conflicts with existing facilities.
Collaborate with vendors, internal GIS and CAD teams to produce all required documentation for application packages.
Follow specific and detailed procedures while remaining flexible enough to adapt to changing standards.
Coordinate with the project team for forecasting, scheduling, resources management, and quality assurance.
Review project deliverables for accuracy and apprise the project management team of risks, issues, and recommended mitigations.
Work with various managers across the project to identify scope creep, manage change orders, and complete routine billing.
Ensure the integrity of the customer access network is maintained and provide support for the deployment of access technologies.
Assist with as‑built package completion, delivery, and billing closeout.
Qualifications
Required Skills
Sound OSP engineering experience deploying fiber optic and copper networks; knowledge of engineering principles within OSP job‑related functional area including general practices, procedures, and industry standards.
Knowledge of fiber optic and copper counts, fiber assignments, and splicing schematics in all OSP environments.
Knowledge of engineering tools including MicroStation, AutoCAD, OCalc, 3‑GIS, or similar GIS/KMZ platforms.
Proficient in Adobe, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Sheets, and Google Drive.
Additional Skills
Strong communication and people skills.
Strong language skills required, both oral & written.
Sense of urgency to meet all due dates.
Follow‑up with customers and provide status of assigned work.
Proven ability to communicate effectively at multiple levels: from team members to executive management.
Education & Screening
Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred; alternatively, completion of related courses and diploma from a technical school or community college.
Qualify on pre‑employment screening, including non‑negligent driving record.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
Obtain satisfactory results from background/employment history investigation and drug screening.
Work Environment
Work in a virtual team environment.
Work schedule that parallels the hours of the customer’s work schedule.
