The Role
The Motor Vehicle Examiner positions are with Branch Operations, working in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of customer contact and money handling. We are looking for detail-oriented people with excellent customer service skills. These positions will assist with the intake of customers, perform a wide range of motor vehicle transactions, and should be proficient with operating computer systems and data entry. Employees may be required to work in other branch locations and may be required to work overtime based on agency needs. This role may be scheduled to work up to 39 hours per week.

At the DMV, we are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of the motoring public through education, outreach and enforcement in the areas of vehicle weight and safety inspections, heavy duty diesel emission testing, traffic enforcement and investigations of any motor vehicle related complaints.

Purpose of Job Class
In the Department of Motor Vehicles, this class is accountable for examining forms, applications and supporting documentation before granting issuance of a title, operator's license and/or registration.
Examples of Duties
Review and examine applications and supporting documents for operator licenses, vehicle registrations and certificates of title.
Perform limited restorations of driver licenses or motor vehicle registrations.
Verify data such as insurance coverage, year, make, model, VIN, taxes, and suspensions.
Determine proof of ownership and encumbrances; contact municipal collectors for clearance.
Prepare form letters for rejection or requests for additional information.
Compare data with reference manuals and publications for verification.
Issue motor vehicle operator licenses with photos; collect fees; balance cash and documents.
Operate office equipment and computer terminals; schedule appointments; maintain records.
May process other registration activities and perform limited fill-in duties.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
Knowledge of office systems and procedures
Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Ability to count money; read and apply laws, policies and procedures
Maintain records; examine documents for completeness and accuracy
Operate personal computers, terminals and standard office software
Use reference manuals
Minimum Qualifications
General Experience:
Three (3) years of clerical experience.
Special Experience:
One (1) year of General Experience must include face-to-face public contact or telephone customer service involving explanations of programs/services.
Substitutions Allowed:
College training may be substituted for General Experience at 15 semester hours equals 1/2 year, up to 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in production environment with face-to-face customer service
Experience resolving customer escalations
Experience reviewing legal documents, data entry and handling confidential information
Experience processing cash, checks, and card transactions and balancing a register
Experience applying policies independently to make decisions
Experience operating computers and standard office equipment
Experience managing competing priorities and coordinating workflows
Character Requirements
A thorough background investigation may be conducted prior to appointment.
