Water Metering Technician

Job Description
Under general supervision of the EPA Project Manager or other assigned supervisor, the Metering Technician will perform water flow meter replacements throughout the service area. The majority of water meter sizes will vary from ¾” to 1”, though occasionally 1.5” up to 4” meter replacements may be required. This position and task have deadlines for completion under contract.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities

Safely remove old analog water flow meters and properly install new AMR water meters throughout the public water system and water distribution service area.

Ensure all safety and water quality procedures are followed as required by local, state, and federal regulations.

Communicate with site management to schedule meter replacements and work efficiently to provide proper documentation and tracking of meters replaced.

Work overtime when necessary to offset approved leave and meet contract deadlines.

Maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record to operate a company vehicle.

Work independently with limited supervision, recognizing when to plan and seek assistance.

Prevent unnecessary damage to private property during the meter replacement project and report or resolve any unavoidable damage properly.

Understand that this position is contract‑specific and not part of Operations and Maintenance; site management will review performance for potential permanent employment upon completion.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED.

At least two years of related field work experience or any equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Must pass a security background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of hand tools, troubleshooting field problems, and ability to work with limited supervision.

Basic data entry and computer skills including Google Applications Docs, Excel, and Word.

Understanding of basic water quality practices.

Strong customer relations and professional communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Honest, dependable, reliable, and proactive.

Willing to learn and grow as an employee and team member.

Required Certifications and Licenses

Valid state‑issued driver’s license.

California Water Distribution Operator certification (Preferred).

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Will frequently sit, stand, and walk for up to 6‑7 hours per day.

Occasional fine finger movements and continuous eye‑hand coordination.

Capability to bend, twist, climb, and reach above the shoulder to accomplish tasks.

Use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) during task completion.

Pay Range
$33.65 to $38.46 per hour.
