Job Summary and Qualifications

Reviews work of others done in the department. Resolves technical problems and ensures remedial actions have been taken.

Maintains accreditation with JCAHO, CAP, state, FDA.

Acts as a role model for other laboratory personnel to follow.

Identifies training and education needs of individuals performing tests.

Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation from many perspectives, consider various alternatives, and choose the appropriate action.

Demonstrates good leadership by developing standards of performance, areas responsible for accountability, and delegation of authority to various support personnel.

Demonstrates broad knowledge of laboratory departments.

Performs work according to established policies and procedures.

Correlates results with diagnosis and each other, and questions all incompatible results.

Demonstrates ability to deal with priorities first, and plans for completion of remaining duties.

Makes effort to expand knowledge of departmental and laboratory operations.

Is accessible to laboratory to provide on-site, telephone consultation.

Evaluate, monitor and ensure the competency of all testing personnel assigned to his/her section or shift.

Performs performance appraisals as directed by the laboratory technical director.

Disciplines employees following hospital policy and procedure at the direction of the laboratory technical director.

Has complete understanding of laboratory policies and procedures.

Assumes the responsibilities and makes decisions as needed in the absence of the laboratory technical director.

Performs duties in an independent manner with no direct supervision required.

Helps others, and performs duties that need to be performed especially when unassigned.

Identifies ways to increase section revenues and reduce section expenses.

Completes reports and evaluations within the requested time frame.

Treats co-workers, patients and physicians with respect and courtesy and professionalism.

Contributes to departmental morale by avoiding personality conflicts or being critical of others.

Accepts and profits from constructive criticism.

Assists in the hiring of appropriate staff jobs and integrates proper training, education and feedback systems as assigned.

Demonstrates ability to enhance personal career skills effectively.

Manages human resources in an effective manner.

Motivates human behavior between all staff members in manner that does not undermine section supervisors and maximizes motivation opportunities.

Establishes and maintain laboratory QI program.

Coordinates and manages new laboratory employee orientation.

Identifies problems or opportunities to improve service to patients.

Performs testing in a timely manner.

Demonstrates the ability to set priorities.

Completed work assigned during shift, leaves minimal amount for next shift.

Responds to changes in work as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage.

Writes legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.

Establish a quality control program appropriate for testing performed, parameters for acceptable levels and ensure these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process.

Maintains clean and safe working environment.

Verifies the name of tube or specimen with requisition, investigates abnormal results.

Performs preventive maintenance of all instrumentation in section.

Ensures that supplies are available.

Actively participates in phlebotomy and the accession responsibilities.

Dresses according to the hospital and departmental dress code.

Accepts and profits from constructive criticism.

Answers telephones and retrieves as much information as possible from files, rather than forwarding calls.

Experience
Preferred - Must have at least two years supervisory experience. Decision making substantiated by in depth knowledge of laboratory procedures, principles and instruments. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Education
REQUIRED

- Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology, Biological, Chemical or Physical Science. Nursing Degree will be considered with the required CLIA acceptable courses.

PREFERRED

- Bachelors Degree In Medical Technology Or Laboratory Science

Certification
REQUIRED

- Successful completion of registry within 6 months of hire for anyone with a hire date of or after 1.1.2005. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required.

Acceptable - Registry/Licensure in a specialty area will be considered.

Preferred - ASCP. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required.
