Job Description
The Staff Accountant supports the finance team by performing a variety of accounting functions with accuracy and efficiency, including expense allocations, prepaid amortizations, month-end journal entries, and account reconciliations. Working under the guidance of the Senior Accountant, this role maintains financial records, establishes accounts, balances ledgers, and investigates discrepancies to ensure the integrity of financial reporting. The Staff Accountant applies strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assist with financial analyses and resolve accounting issues, contributing to timely, accurate, and complete financial operations.
The primary responsibilities of the candidate will be ultimately up to the Senior Accountant, but some duties may include:
Prepare, analyze, and post general ledger journal entries, ensuring the accuracy of all recorded transactions.
Reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis and summarize balance sheet activity through detailed reconciliations and roll-forwards.
Record expense report allocations, monthly amortizations, and other allocation entries accurately.
Prepare accruals and reconcile loan interest.
Assist with crop year-end close, annual close, and audit preparation.
Participate in the month-end close process and support special accounting projects as needed.
Collaborate with Accounts Payable to maintain accurate financial records.
Contribute to process documentation and continuous improvement initiatives within accounting operations.
Perform additional accounting and administrative tasks as assigned, while developing expertise in company accounting practices.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), procedures, and their application
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office
Experience preparing and analyzing general ledger journal entries
Ability to perform bank and account reconciliations, record expense allocations, accruals, and amortization entries
Support for month-end, year-end, crop-year, and audit close processes
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines independently
Collaborative mindset, able to work with cross-functional teams and support special projects
Commitment to process documentation, continuous improvement, and professional development
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a willingness to learn and take initiative
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, or equivalent experience
Internship, part-time, or early career experience in accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or finance is a plus but not required
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based work and other office tasks.
Ability to use hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
Ability to occasionally stand, walk, and move within an office environment to attend meetings or access files and office equipment.
