Mechanical Irrigation Service Technician – Level 2

Position Summary
The Mechanical Irrigation Service Technician - Level 2 is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical irrigation systems, including center pivots, linear systems, and related agricultural irrigation equipment. This role involves working in the field under varying conditions to ensure irrigation systems operate efficiently and reliably. The technician will diagnose mechanical issues, perform system alignments, replace components, and assist with system upgrades. Level 2 technicians are expected to demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, leadership, and professionalism, often supervising and mentoring Level 1 Technicians while ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and to high-quality standards.

Essential Functions

Install, maintain, and repair center pivot and linear irrigation systems according to manufacturer specifications and company standards.

Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues including drivetrains, gearboxes, tower alignment, wheel ruts, and structural components.

Perform system alignments and calibrations to ensure proper tracking and operation.

Inspect and replace mechanical components such as motors, gearboxes, drive shafts, u-joints, and bearings.

Read and interpret work orders, system layouts, and manufacturer specifications.

Perform routine maintenance including lubrication, adjustments, and preventative service inspections.

Assist with installation and repair of sprinkler packages, drops, and nozzles.

Operate service trucks, trailers, and equipment to transport tools and materials to job sites.

Use hand and power tools safely and effectively in field conditions.

Assist in minor electrical troubleshooting related to system operation (panels, switches, and wiring connections).

Maintain accurate service records, notes, and documentation of work completed.

Communicate clearly with supervisors, managers, and customers regarding system performance, issues, and recommendations.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment on job sites and in service vehicles.

Train and support Level 1 Technicians in proper procedures and best practices.

Occasional Requirements

Travel to out-of-area job sites for multi-day service or installation work.

Assist installation crews with new pivots or linear system builds as needed.

Provide support to other departments (pump, electrical, or shop) during slower periods.

Attend company training sessions, safety meetings, and manufacturer certification programs.

Work extended hours during peak irrigation seasons.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Strong mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting ability, especially with agricultural equipment or irrigation systems.

Experience with center pivot and/or linear irrigation systems preferred.

Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and implement effective repairs in the field.

Basic understanding of electrical components related to irrigation systems.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and system layouts.

Experience operating service vehicles and basic equipment.

Familiarity with agricultural environments and irrigation practices is preferred.

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Reliable, self-motivated, and adaptable in changing field conditions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 75 pounds.

Frequent bending, kneeling, and working on uneven or muddy terrain.

Ability to climb ladders and irrigation structures with supervision.

Extended periods of standing, walking, and physical labor.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Manual dexterity to safely operate tools and assist with mechanical tasks.
