Responsibilities
Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects. The essential functions include:

Preparing engineering designs, drawings, and specifications.

Preparing cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials, and equipment related to construction, repairs, and maintenance.

Providing engineering support to operations staff.

Reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies of processes by collecting, obtaining, and analyzing samples and data.

Resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and specifications.

Supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations.

Assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants.

Determining resources needed to complete assigned work.

Reviewing plans, permit applications, and specifications developed by staff, consultants, and contractors.

Verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for engineering projects.

Preparing and supervising the preparation of technical engineering reports and documentation.

Interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating, and counseling staff.

Preparing bid documents, reviewing and analyzing bids, and conducting meetings and presentations.

Qualifications
Minimum requirements:

Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, including at least two (2) years equivalent to a City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.

Current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering.

Substitutions:

Licensed engineers in other states who meet the minimum requirements may apply; if successful, they are placed under waiver until the required California license is presented.

No substitution for the two years of work experience equivalent to a Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.

Working Conditions
Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Certain roles may involve work on weekends, holidays, part‑time, nights, and/or overtime.
