The Role
As a Structural Engineer 3 in the Propulsion Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (PREPY; Department E50), you will analyze, research, and develop structural engineering specifications for metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials used in product design or operation. Responsibilities include dynamic structural (shock) analyses using finite element methods with FEMAP and ABAQUS, hand calculations, development of engineering calculation reports, verification of structural analyses reports, training junior engineers, preparing customer submittal letters, supporting ship alteration proposals (ShipAlts), and working independently with minimal oversight. You will interface with Construction Engineering and Trades to mitigate fabrication and installation issues related to CVN-78 Class propulsion plant structures, and collaborate closely with all PREPY engineering and design disciplines. Tools utilized include Siemen's TEAMCENTER, FEMAP, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, and MATHCAD.
Must Have
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree in engineering and 3 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. in engineering with 0 years of experience
Nice to Have
Planning Yard experience, specifically working knowledge of responding to in-service ships LARs
Experience leading and submitting ShipAlt proposals to NAVSEA for new construction ships
Proficiency in pre/post processing utilizing Femap/Nastran for shock analyses
BS in Civil/Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace engineering preferred
