Emergency Room Technical Assistant – 24 Hours

Status: Contingent | Location: Plymouth Medical Center
The Henry Ford Plymouth ED is an 18 bed, freestanding ER that is connected to a medical center. Our providers (both physicians and MLPs) see pediatrics and adults, and accept EMS traffic when appropriate. Staff work closely together and share a central workstation, and collaborate with pharmacy, lab, US, and radiology. We respect and appreciate diversity, continually seek best and safest practices, and care for patients as we would our family and loved ones.
Among other duties, EDTs here perform blood draws, EKGs, vital signs/triage assistance, bladder scanning, and assistance in codes. They may also sit and monitor behavioral health patients 1:1, assist with fell‑patient care, splinting, basic wound care, and maintain cleanliness of treatment rooms in cooperation with housekeeping.
General Summary
Assist with patient care based on individual needs within scope of practice under direct supervision of a registered nurse or provider.
Principle Duties And Responsibilities
Assist RNs and providers with assessments, examinations and treatments as requested.
Drawing blood and collection of specimens
EKG’s
Splint/immobilizer applications
Taking vital signs on adults and pediatric patients
Inserting neuro‑gastric tubes
Urethral catheterization of adult patients
Discontinuation of peripheral IVs
Starting unmediated IVs
Prepare and assist with procedures such as suturing and cast application, and miscellaneous procedures including pelvic exams, lumbar punctures.
Assist patients as needed.
Recognize potential life‑threatening dysrhythmias and abnormal vital signs and report to RN/Provider.
Adhere to hospital policy on standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
Document patient care performed.
Interact with patients and families, ensuring excellent patient and customer experiences.
Transport patients and supplies.
Cleans equipment, monitors stock, and restocks supplies as required.
Assist in ordering routine equipment; maintain adequate stretchers, wheelchairs, suction equipment in ER area.
Maintain departmental cleanliness and prepare rooms between patients.
Education/Experience Required
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
BCLS certification required.
Previous Emergency Department Technician or Medical Assistant experience preferred.
Certifications/Licensures Required
One of the following certifications/programs is required:
B‑EMT
Graduate from a formal Medical Assistant program
Completion of a formal nursing education program
Completion of a formal medical doctor education program
OR one year of applicable Emergency Room Technical experience in lieu of the above completed certification/program.
Additional Requirements
Must complete applicable certification/program within 12 months of hire.
Successful completion of a 180‑day orientation period required.
EMT license preferred.
