As a
Field Service Technician‑Network , you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases, including key systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems. You will also perform splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment, installing aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable. In this role you will have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications and will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with customers, proactively selling TDS services and products such as Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks.
In addition to providing superior customer service and identifying customer needs, you will demonstrate and promote TDS products, educating customers about Local Service, Central Office Services, Structured Cabling, MAC, Voice Mail, Audio and/or Video Conferencing, and Non‑regulated CPE. You may also perform varied or additional duties to meet the demands of TDS, potentially corresponding with other Field Services Technician positions.
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected for this position must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Mooresville, NC warehouse located at 420 S Academy St – Mooresville, NC 28115.
This position can be hired as either a Field Service Technician (requisition ID #2026‑29166) or a Field Service Technician‑Network (requisition ID #2026‑29165) depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate. Responsibilities
Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, or other TDS products and services for new and existing customers.
Identify the location of defective cable using various test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, or customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs.
Climb poles and operate construction equipment as required.
Locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
Keep an orderly log of all locate requests in the exchange area.
Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
Assist with and provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections, responding to trouble dispatches.
Provide support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
At least 1 year of basic technical telecommunications experience or current/past military service with an honorable discharge.
At least 6 months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, and repair, or switch training.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet TDS’s business needs, including obligations to customers and their needs.
Other Qualifications
Must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements upon hire, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
Must be available for on‑call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel; willing to work overtime as needed.
Must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum and maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW of greater than 10,000 lbs.
Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
Understanding of telecommunication products and services such as inside wiring/cable, internet/intranet, bonding & grounding, data & computer transmission concepts, fiber optic transmission, static sensitive equipment, color codes, structured wiring, video/CATV/DBS installation, inventory systems, cable locating, battery maintenance, key systems/PBX, centrex, switch maintenance, voicemail, special circuits, fiber terminals, subscriber CXR terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN voice & data, and testing & certifying loops.
Practical knowledge and experience with computer applications including (but not limited to) databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Explorer, and CD‑ROMs.
Ability to work and make decisions independently with little or no supervision.
Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, and effective verbal and written communications skills for interaction with internal and external customers.
Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.

Frequently move about and reach for items, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be required to balance or climb. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The position may require working outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms, and under extreme weather conditions. Exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment is possible.
