positions are being filled within the Zoonotic Disease Unit (ZDU) of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention & Control (IDEPC) Division. The work includes assisting the State Public Health Veterinarian and other ZDU epidemiologists with surveillance programs for zoonotic diseases such as rabies, enteric pathogens from animals, toxoplasmosis, tularemia, brucellosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and other diseases. Responsibilities include day-to-day surveillance program components, telephone interviews of case-patients, data entry and management, specimen collection, data analysis, outbreak investigations, and participation in other projects. Student workers will participate in the UNEX surveillance program, assisting with sample tracking, data entry, and data management. They will also provide rabies consultation to the public and healthcare providers.
The positions report to the State Public Health Veterinarian, the Zoonotic Diseases Unit supervisor, and epidemiologists. These roles are part of the MDH mission to protect and improve health in Minnesota and contribute to health equity.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct surveillance activities for infectious diseases including rabies, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, toxoplasmosis, tularemia, brucellosis, and enteric zoonotic diseases (e.g., Salmonella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and other Shiga toxin-producing E. coli).
Conduct surveillance activities as part of the UNEX surveillance program.
Assist in outbreak investigations within ZDU, FWVZ, and IDEPC Division.
Assist ZDU staff in education and outreach efforts.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of two years of post-secondary education in health, public health or a related field. Applicants should describe experience clearly on the resume/application and indicate months/years for each job, current college, intended major, and anticipated graduation date. Only applicants whose resumes demonstrate fulfillment of each minimum qualification will be considered.
Student Worker Eligibility:
Must be enrolled in a postsecondary or graduate program or plan to enroll within three months. Students may be off for summer or one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. Enrolled students must carry at least six semester
ine quarter credits (if at a credit-granting institution). Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or progress on a dissertation. An Educational Verification form will be required prior to appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in biology, animal science, agriculture, zoology, veterinary science, public health or related field.
Career goals in infectious disease epidemiology and knowledge of epidemiology of infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, and the One Health concept.
Experience providing professional customer service, including communication, task prioritization, and adaptability.
Strong ability to explain technical information, work collaboratively, and interact professionally with community members and partners.
Experience with human-animal interactions (e.g., agricultural background, 4-H/FFA, veterinary clinic work, shelter volunteering, or direct work with animals).
Additional Requirements
Successful completion of a background check and employment reference check.
This position is hybrid; majority of work in St. Paul office with limited telework and occasional travel within the metropolitan area, using a state vehicle.
Travel required; driver’s license not required, but travel is expected.
U.S. citizenship/residency requirement: must be able to accept work in the U.S. on start date. H-1B sponsorship is not available.
Work Details
Hours: Part-time up to 20 hours per week. Specific hours/days are flexible within 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends. Duration: through September 15, 2028, or until educational program completion, whichever comes first.
