
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Primary Purpose
The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, calibration, and optimization of facility instrumentation, automation, and control systems. This role supports reliable facility operation by ensuring all control, measurement, safety, and analytical systems function properly and in compliance with regulatory and company standards. The technician collaborates closely with engineers, operators, and contractors and participates in on‑call rotations and emergency response as required.
Key Responsibilities
Instrumentation, Controls, and Automation
Maintain, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, repair, and monitor instrumentation and control systems, including PLCs, DCS, SCADA, and analytical systems.
Maintain performance of temperature, pressure, flow, and level measurement devices, valves, hydraulic control panels, and single‑loop controllers.
Safely operate and maintain all facility instrumentation, measurement devices, and final control elements, including process control, safety shutdown, emergency shutdown, fire detection and suppression, and gas detection systems.
Troubleshoot systems using P&IDs, loop diagrams, and control documentation.
Maintain and optimize SCADA communication systems and programmable logic controllers.
Electrical & I&E Maintenance
Perform broad I&E maintenance tasks in compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
Maintain electrical switchgear and power distribution systems.
Evaluate, develop, implement, and maintain facility grounding systems.
Complete inspections, preventive maintenance (PMs), checklists, and corrective maintenance activities.
Properly document and complete all I&E maintenance reports and service records.
Engineering, Projects, and Continuous Improvement
Work with facility engineers to optimize control systems and ensure regulatory compliance and recordkeeping.
Participate in project planning, including P&ID development, Cause & Effect diagrams, and control system design.
Maintain and update system documentation, including loop diagrams, panel drawings, and control narratives.
Assist in the development of I&E maintenance procedures and annual maintenance budgets.
Continuously improve preventive maintenance programs and asset performance.
Safety, Compliance, and Quality
Maintain assets safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies.
Handle regulatory issues as required.
Participate in safety and environmental training and daily safety briefings.
Observe and enforce company safety and operational procedures; promptly report unsafe conditions.
Evaluate company and contractor safety practices and performance.
Achieve and maintain all required Operator Qualifications (OQ) and progression requirements.
Contractors, Inventory, and Administration
Provide oversight of on‑site contractors, ensuring competency, safety, and productivity.
Manage spare and critical parts inventory to minimize delays and failures.
Maintain and manage the approved contractor list.
Analyze purchases and invoices to identify improvement opportunities.
Use Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) for documentation and reporting.
Teamwork and Leadership
Work independently or collaboratively as a team member or team leader.
Mentor and support fellow employees when opportunities arise.
Maintain open and effective communication with operators, supervisors, and management.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements
Participate in an on‑call rotation and respond to emergency callouts during working and non‑working hours.
Perform housekeeping and general maintenance to maintain clean and safe work areas, including offices, shops, vehicles, and field locations.
Use mechanical, measuring, and testing devices; hand tools; computers; and company vehicles.
Perform physical tasks including climbing stairs and structures, operating valves, and lifting 40–50 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
Drive company vehicles to work sites away from the base location.
Use and prepare required documentation, including DOT and regulatory documents.
Other Duties
Perform additional tasks as trained, requested, or assigned by supervision.

Minimum Requirements
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience & Technical Knowledge
General knowledge of 4–20 mA control systems and associated transmitters.
Understanding of control network architecture and basic automation concepts.
Petroleum transportation, storage, distribution, or related electrical/mechanical experience is a plus.
Must successfully complete required Operator Qualification (OQ) testing following training.
Licenses, Skills, and Abilities
Valid driver’s license with the ability to meet company insurance requirements.
Demonstrated electrical and/or mechanical aptitude.
Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.
Ability to follow supervision, work cooperatively with others, and function effectively within a team environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to read and understand technical information.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations using calculators or computers as needed.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate reliability and dependability.
Strong problem‑solving skills, including the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues individually or collaboratively, even in ambiguous situations.
Must successfully complete all required training, evaluations, background checks, and post‑offer drug screening.
Required to carry a company‑provided cell phone and be available to respond during working and non‑working hours based on business needs.
Physical Demands
Ability to manually open and close valves and perform material handling tasks.
Ability to regularly lift, carry, or move 40–50 lbs., and occasionally up to 100 lbs.

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prior experience in the petroleum, natural gas, chemical processing, or power generation industries.
Experience with instrumentation, electronics, and industrial control systems in oil and gas or similar environments.
Understanding of process control theory, gas processing fundamentals, and automation systems.
Knowledge of safe handling practices for flammable gases, liquids, and high‑pressure systems.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Three or more years of experience reading and interpreting instrumentation and electrical diagrams.
Three or more years of experience with electrical controls, power distribution, and motor control systems.
Three or more years of experience troubleshooting SCADA, PLC, DCS, and pneumatic control loops.
