Our Ohio, Michigan and Indiana Transportation team is searching for a motivated and experienced Roadway Design Lead who brings strong technical and design‑management skills to deliver highway‑related infrastructure projects across the region. The final candidate could be located in Columbus, Cleveland or Cincinnati, OH as well as Troy, MI, and will work on multi‑discipline transportation projects focused on highway, roadway and interchange design for clients such as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), adjacent Departments of Transportation (DOT), counties and local municipalities.

What You’ll Be Doing

Provide technical leadership over all aspects of highway and roadway design—including support for design‑build transportation projects—in accordance with ODOT roadway design standards, AASHTO, FHWA and MUTCD requirements.

Lead roadway design preparation at the conceptual, preliminary and final design stages, including geometrics, alignments, grading, and maintaining traffic following ODOT procedures.

Develop specifications, cost estimates and final bid packages using ODOT standard plans and statewide engineering details.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (roadway, drainage, structural, traffic, public involvement, environmental) and provide technical oversight on roadway and planning design tasks.

Conduct detailed plan quality reviews and participate in value engineering studies aligned with Ohio design guidance.

Direct and coordinate design engineers and technicians to ensure projects progress on schedule and budget, while mentoring early‑career engineers in developing high‑quality design plans.

Engage directly with clients, maintain strong client relationships, and identify upcoming opportunities to support pursuit and proposal efforts.

Apply business acumen by coordinating staffing, scheduling, budgeting, quality control, safety and subcontractor management.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio and/or Michigan.

Extensive experience delivering transportation projects within the highway market sector, including major infrastructure programs.

Proficiency with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, InRoads and Civil 3D, all commonly used for DOT project development.

Demonstrated experience with roadway design for state DOTs—strong preference for ODOT projects.

Strong technical background in traffic engineering, highway design and roadway drainage, with expertise in AASHTO, FHWA and MUTCD standards.

Ideally, You’ll Also Have

Extensive 3D modelling experience using OpenRoads; strong MicroStation/OpenRoads proficiency.

Working knowledge of ProjectWise.

Active engagement in professional organizations.

Previous experience supporting alternative delivery (Design‑Build or P3) transportation projects.

Compensation
Base salary range: $135,000.00 to $165,000.00, with pay determined by location and other factors such as skills, experience and education.
