Are you a skilled attorney ready to grow in your career? Do you want to elevate criminal prosecution across the state and help make a difference in the lives of the public? The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) seeks Assistant Attorneys General for its Criminal Litigation Unit.

Position Summary
Assistant Attorneys General will prosecute selected criminal cases and provide training and advice to state prosecutors and law enforcement. All will provide legal advice and representation under the supervision of a Deputy Unit Director.

Recruitment Scope
Positions are available at two headquarters:

Madison: Complex Criminal and Chapter 980 Cases

Milwaukee: Firearms Cases

Applicants should indicate preferred legal focus and required headquarters location in their letter of qualifications.

Compensation
Pay schedule 09, range 75; starting pay $44.00–$58.07 per hour, approximately $91,520‑$120,786 annually, plus benefits. Current or former state employees are paid per the Wisconsin Compensation Plan. An 18‑month probationary period may apply.

Locations & Work‑Authorization

Hybrid schedule possible after training. Remote work requires high‑speed internet; no travel reimbursement. In‑state travel and driving required.

The DOJ does not sponsor work visas. Verification of identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. is required. Background check with fingerprints will be conducted.

Special Qualification
Candidate must be a member in good standing of the Wisconsin State Bar.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree.

Professional law experience in negotiating case resolution.

First‑chair experience litigating motion hearings, evidentiary hearings, and jury trials.

Experience litigating criminal or civil cases at state and/or federal level with duties including drafting pleadings, pre‑trial motions and briefs; reviewing or producing discovery; analyzing facts or applying law; preparing witnesses; handling cases from investigation through post‑conviction.

Well‑Qualified Applicant

Litigating complex criminal or civil cases (e.g., attempted homicide, firearm discharge from vehicle, child abuse, conspiracy, cold‑case homicide).

Litigating complex firearm cases.

Litigating complex cases with dual experts (e.g., abusive head trauma, NGI trials, DNA evidence).

Post‑conviction litigation experience, including research, analysis, and writing briefs in circuit, district, or appellate courts.

Training professional audiences on legal topics.

Litigating Daubert motions on firearms and trace/touch DNA.

Litigating Chapter 980 cases.
