
C-17 Avionics Design and Analysis Engineer 4/5 (Electronic Sys Design & Analy)

Position Overview
Boeing Global Services (BGS) is seeking a skilled Avionics Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team in Long Beach, CA. This position is part of the C-17 Military Airlifter Program within the Avionics/Flight Management & Software Engineering organization. As an Avionics Systems Engineer, you will apply engineering knowledge to implement upgrades and improvements to the C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
The selected candidate will rapidly integrate into the team and employ an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis, design, development, system-level testing, verification, and validation of the C-17 Flight Management System (FMS) and other avionics systems. You will also contribute to field investigations and develop new capabilities for the C-17.
Position Responsibilities
The given tasks will broaden upon candidate’s knowledge in aviation, including leading areas such as navigation and localization (position awareness), guidance and flight controls, and federal and military regulations and policies, and will expand as the candidate grows within the domain. This role builds expertise in aircraft technologies that are both industry standards and C‑17 specific.
The primary subject matter for this role will be the Flight Management System, responsible for flight planning
avigation, guidance, control, display, and automation of aircraft.
Works with customers and leads internal teams to develop and document complex electronic and electrical system requirements.
Understands how to lead, plan, and accomplish tasks through formal channels and informal networks; understands the cultures of organizations.
Analyzes and translates requirements into system, hardware and software designs and interface specifications.
Oversees, tests and validates to ensure system designs meet operational and functional requirements.
Solves problems concerning and provides other support of fielded hardware and software over the entire product lifecycle.
Demonstrates an interest in personal learning and development; seeks feedback from multiple sources and modifies behavior based on feedback or self‑analysis of past mistakes.
Take steps to develop and maintain the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform.
Ability to understand the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another. This includes anticipating future events and applying systems thinking principles to accelerate performance.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
5 or more years of industry experience in design, implementation.
Work‑related programming experience with any of the following software development languages: Ada, C, C++, C#, JAVA, FORTRAN, and Python.
Knowledge of how to derive and allocate requirements (e.g., system, sub‑system, software) and show traceability throughout the product lifecycle.
Ability to conceive, develop, optimize, maintain and modify electronic/electrical system designs based on requirements.
Ability to provide technical coordination with internal and external suppliers and customers.
Knowledge of verification, validation, certification and qualification processes and procedures, including governing regulations and compliance requirements.
Ability to assess and document test or analysis data to show compliance.
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non‑US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
Level 5: 10 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience working with DOORS to generate and analyze system requirements.
Experience with Waterfall, Agile Processes and project management tools including Confluence, Jira, Version One.
Experience with MIL‑STD‑1553 and ARINC‑429 communication protocols.
Experience with RTCA DO‑178, DO‑254 and DO‑160.
Experience with MIL‑HDBK‑516C.
Have one of the following: Military/Commercial Aircrew experience, Private Pilot License, or Flight Instructor certification.
