
Distribution Design Technician III

Job Summary
Responsible for providing Distribution Engineering Design and Estimating services to Electric Utility Clients on Distribution design projects and third‑party joint‑use attachments. The position may include reconductor, pole change‑out, failure, revenue, and system reliability projects, and joint‑use attachment work on facilities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Develop detailed distribution designs and cost estimates tailored to customer needs and timelines on complex projects.
Run modeling software on poles and equipment to assess wind loading for current and future conditions (GDT, IKE Pole‑Foreman, Maximo).
Coordinate with governmental regulatory bodies on permitting and technical issue resolution for highway widenings, reconductoring, major feeder rebuilds, etc.
Conduct field inspections, patrol distribution lines, and support storm restoration.
Follow client procedures, keep supervisors apprised of status, maintain documentation, and follow up on key activities.
Facilitate interactions with external customers via phone, e‑mail, and meetings; provide records of significant meetings; update miscellaneous reports such as Construction Report.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Associate’s degree in Electrical Technology or Engineering Technology (or similar discipline).
More than five but less than ten years of experience in a related role.
Candidates with two or more years of directly related experience considered with Associate’s Degree preferred.
At least one year of on‑the‑job experience or formal training with graphic or electronic design software (e.g., GDT, IKE Pole‑Foreman, or Maximo).
Experience with utilities and coursework or exposure to distribution design topics such as AC voltage generation, impedance and voltage drop, three‑phase power systems, system layout, overhead lines, underground distribution systems, substations, distributed generation, substation transformers, distribution transformers, fault‑interrupting devices, fundamentals of protection and overcurrent protection.
Estimating experience.
Ability to understand codes and practices related to the position.
Basic mathematics and strong communication skills with a diverse audience.
Working Conditions
Primarily conducted at project construction sites within utility company service area, often requiring occasional travel.
Interaction with team members, supervisors, and client personnel.
Must wear safety equipment as required for personal protection.
May be required to work at more than one job site in a day and tolerate climate changes.
